🎬 🚀 Tomorrow night: Don't miss round two of our "Listening to Alaska" film premiere series!

Join the University of Alaska Museum of the North and the Geophysical Institute for an exciting premiere of the new 17-minute film “Listening to Alaska” at the Walt & Marita Babula Planetarium, paired with a talk and Q&A with a scientist on one of the topics featured in the film.

This Wednesday, Oct. 14, space physicist Don Hampton will lead a Q&A on the aurora and launching rockets at Poker Flat Research Range. Don is the former chief scientist at Poker and has spent decades studying our upper atmosphere. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the film premiere and talk start at 7 PM.

Tickets for a "Listening to Alaska" premiere event are $16 for adults, $12 for youth (17 and under)/UA faculty, staff and students, and $8 for museum members. Tickets are available for purchase at the museum, in person only, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Planetarium capacity is limited to 65 people, so please consider purchasing your tickets in advance of the show to ensure you get a seat! You may also purchase tickets at the door.

This series is in-person only. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. All remaining presentations in the series are on Wednesdays starting at 7 PM:

The More You Look Podcast Episode 47: Art in the Making

In 2011 the museum approached 5 local artists and invited them to participate in a special exhibition to showcase the processes of art making. The museum then spent a year interviewing and filming the artists in their studios and natural habitats. The exhibition presented their work, and an in-depth look into their artistic processes. Mareca Guthie curated the show. Theresa Bakker conducted the interviews. The artists were photographer Adam Ottavi, painter Alfred Skondovitch, print-maker Sara Tabbert, ceramicist Teresa Shannon, and woodcutter and mask-maker Glen Simpson. This episode of The More You Look looks back 15 years and pulls those interviews out of the vault.

Produced by the UA Museum of the North, The More You Look can also be heard on KUAC radio, on many Tuesdays at 7pm.

Our five-part film premiere and lecture series continues with its second event! This week, Don Hampton takes us to Poker Flat Research Range to explore the science—and excitement—of launching rockets into Alaska’s upper atmosphere.
