Did you know it's International Museum Day? International Council of Museums - ICOM has created this year's theme to show how museums can bring us together.

"Museums are trusted public spaces where people encounter stories, objects and one another. In times of social fragmentation, polarisation, and unequal access to knowledge and culture, museums help rebuild connection across generations, across communities, and across borders, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion, and peace within and between communities worldwide."

Celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Norge

Our guest post this month comes from UAF Museum Research Apprenticeship Program (MRAP) student Ro Neary. Ro is an undergraduate student doing one semester at UAF, on an experience referred to as an "AlaskaMester," where students from other universities spent one semester in Fairbanks to get a taste of our northern life. Ro is a history major who lived in Norway, so this year's 100th anniversary of the flight of the Norge seemed to be the perfect project for her MRAP class....

Come out to the Civic Center at Pioneer Park this weekend! We'll be there with hands-on collections and activities for connecting families to the stories of their precious belongings.

We are grateful for the news that the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grants have been reinstated.

FNA is working on resolving the disruption to the organization.

We are pleased to announce that our community resource fair, "Chasing the Winter Blues," is back on and will happen at the Civic Center at Pioneer Park on Saturday, Jan. 17, 12-4 p.m., as originally planned.

SuperSupernova will soon get to sit face-to-face with John Logan's BSA that forged the path for folks like Soy Tribu, Pablitoviajero, and seba.adventure! 🤩 https://arctos.database.museum/guid/UAM:EH:UA92-017-0001

Last fall, adventurer Agustín Ostos (known online as Soy Tribu) ended his seven-year motorcycle journey in Fairbanks. Deeply inspired by Bus 142, he donated his BMW motorcycle to the museum. It will soon be featured in a new indoor exhibit with items from Bus 142 and photos taken by Chris McCandless, exploring how Alaska’s wild places invite both bold adventures and quiet moments of reflection.

So many beautiful photos have been shared of last week's dramatic aurora show. Here's one that also includes the Museum's Kolmakovsky Blockhouse, which visitors can experience on the museum grounds.

The rehabilitation of the Kolmakovsky collection from the middle Kuskokwim River was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services Save America's Treasures program. Another collection documenting Alaska's cultural heritage preserved for current and future generations at the University of Alaska Museum of the North.
