The 200 members of Chicago based Koreshan Unity acquired 320 acres of land in 1894 and created their own community over the next few years. They eventually acquired nearly 7,500 acres of land, had the only store in Estero Florida and brought education, culture, music and drama to the Southwest Florida frontier. The settlement flourished until the death of their leader, Cyrus R. In 1961 the remaini

ng few members donated 305 acres of land to the State of Florida for historic preservation. Eleven buildings remain in the historic settlement and give a glimpse of what life was like here in the early 1900's.

Meet Noah, one of our dedicated Summer Field Maintenance Volunteers at Koreshan State Park! ☀️💪 Throughout the summer, Noah has worked hard to help keep the park beautiful, healthy, and welcoming for everyone.

From maintaining the bamboo at Bamboo Landing 🎋 to planting and watering new flowers and shrubs 🌸🌱, Noah has taken on a variety of important projects. He has also helped maintain the shell walkways 🐚 and supported many other behind-the-scenes tasks that make such a meaningful difference throughout the park.

We truly appreciate Noah’s hard work, care, and willingness to give his time to Koreshan State Park. 💚 Volunteers like Noah play an essential role in preserving the beauty, history, and natural spaces that visitors enjoy every day.

Celebrate with your furry best friend by exploring our many beautiful trails—perfect for a walk, fresh air, and plenty of tail wags! 🥾🐾

For the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, **all pets must remain on a leash at all times.** 🦮

🏪 Step back into Koreshan history at the General Store!

First established in 1894 and expanded in 1902, the General Store was an essential part of daily life for the Koreshan Unity and neighbors throughout the surrounding area. It provided everyday goods and supplies, helping support the community’s goal of self-sufficiency.

The original store was located along the Estero River. Once the Tamiami Trail was established, the store was moved closer to the road in 1920 for better access. That original riverfront building later burned down in 1938.

While the General Store is not currently open for public viewing inside, it recently received a beautiful exterior facelift, including a fresh paint job. 🎨 Interpretation panels have also been installed in the windows, giving visitors a glimpse of what the store would have looked like.

🐸🌧️ The Koreshan State Park Resource Management Team recently completed a FrogWatch survey with park staff along our wet-season monitoring route!

Our route includes 10 listening stops across Koreshan, Winkler Point, and Estero Bay River Scrub, with each stop at least a half-mile apart. This month, we heard and observed plenty of southern toads! 🐸

FrogWatch surveys take place every third Wednesday from June through September. These nighttime surveys help us collect valuable data about local frog and toad populations, track changes over time, and better understand the health of our area’s wetlands and habitats. 🌿💧

Because amphibians are sensitive to changes in their environment, they are important indicators of ecosystem health. The information gathered during FrogWatch helps support conservation efforts and protects these incredible species for the future. 💚

Every donation truly makes a difference. **100% of donations made in the park—and all proceeds from our gift shop—stay right here at Koreshan State Park!** 🏞️

These funds help with vital needs such as:

🌿♿ **Koreshan State Park is happy to announce that we now have an ADA mobility chair available for visitor use!**

This new mobility chair will help make the park more accessible for visitors with limited mobility, allowing more people to experience our scenic trails, historic settlement, picnic areas, and the natural beauty of the Estero River. 💚🌳

By expanding access, we’re helping ensure that everyone has the opportunity to connect with nature, explore Koreshan’s unique history, and create lasting memories with family and friends.

💜 Meet Florida’s dazzling native: **American beautyberry** (*Callicarpa americana*)! 🌿

This eye-catching shrub is native to Florida and the southeastern United States. In fall, its branches become wrapped in clusters of vibrant purple berries—beautiful for people to admire and an important food source for wildlife. 🐦

The berries are a favorite snack for many birds, including mockingbirds, cardinals, robins, and other songbirds. While the fruit is edible for people too, it’s most often used in jellies and other recipes. 🍇

Traditionally, crushed beautyberry leaves have been used to help discourage insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies. Meanwhile, the berry clusters provide a seasonal feast for birds—making this native plant both lovely and wildlife-friendly! 🦟➡️🐦
