Did you know that not every trout swimming in West Virginia’s streams is native to our waters?

In the latest issue of The Highlands Voice, Christa Clasgens with the WVHC explores the difference between native and wild fish and takes a closer look at West Virginia’s trout. While brook trout are the only trout native to Appalachia, rainbow and brown trout were introduced here in the late 1800s and can now reproduce naturally in some of our waterways.

Understanding the difference matters. Wild, naturally reproducing fish can tell us a great deal about the health of our streams, while the history of our trout also offers a reminder of the importance of protecting native species like our state fish, the brook trout.

The Bee Lady and her bees are buzzing into the Discovery Center at the historic Darden Mill! Join us for our Discovery Time Kids' Activity tomorrow, Saturday, August 29th, from 1-4 PM!

Kids will safely learn about bees and how we protect them with an up-close look at our fuzzy friends. They'll even be able to sample some honey and take home coloring sheets! 🍯🖍️

Cathedral State Park is just one of the many amazing parks throughout our Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area region and is the largest old-growth forest in West Virginia.

The land, once owned by Branson Haas and home to the Brookside Resort, was sold to the state in 1922 under one condition: the forest remain uncut. This is how Cathedral has one of the largest stands of virgin hemlock trees in the state.
