Open the glass doors to The Stirrup Gallery in Myles Center for the Arts where a world of days gone by awaits. Originally established in 2013 as a home to the 10,000-plus North American treasures of The Darby Collection, The S

tirrup Gallery has continued to grow to include eight additional collections – the Lincoln Collection, Howard-Sudbrink Collection, Eleanor Gay Collection, Foster Collection, Senator Davis Collection, Swezy Collection, Gary North Collection and J. The Darby Collection begins with the Stone Age and the hand ax, and ends with the delicate, beautifully crafted glass, wooden and metal objects of the early 20th century. This is the legacy of prodigious collector Hosea M. Darby, a native son of Preston County, West Virginia, and successful Elkins architect and builder, who gave his home and collection of more than 10,000 items to Davis & Elkins College in 1943. The Darby Collection is the showpiece of The Stirrup Gallery. Other items in The Stirrup Gallery’s numerous collections include Senator Davis's 18 karat gold Tiffany and Co. pocket watch from the mid-1800s and a unique Sicilian wedding cart which is completely covered with paintings; pottery from 1500 B.C.; Wedgwood Jasperware; Trajan coins from 98 and 117 CE; Conibo tribe artifacts; portraits of President Lincoln by the famous artist E.A. Burbank; Native American artifacts; and an Egyptian bronze Osiris statuette circa 760 B.C., Mezzo American pottery whistles circa 1000 A.D.

A Roman coin from the Howard - Sudbrink Collection. This is coin that commemorates Emperor Trajan's feat of building a bridge over the river Danube during the Dacian War. Built between 103 AD and 105 AD it guaranteed a supply line for the Roman Legions fighting the Dacian's. It was in use for 165 years and is considered the longest arched bridge for over 1,000 years. Here are some glass President Lincoln paper weights from the Lincoln Collection. The photos that I have been posting are archival photos which is all I have on my laptop. They have a centimeter scale and artifact accession number.The accession number is in these photos say that this collection was acquired in 1996, was the 1st acquisition that year and that artifacts number.

During these trying times I only have access to my work laptop. As I was organizing the files I found a backup folder from the first years of the Stirrup Gallery. It has many photos of artifacts that I don't think have ever been posted before. Here are some of the Foster Collection artifacts, They came from Cyprus, and have many Minoan characteristics.

The Stirrup Gallery office will be closed until July 2020. Here is the first photo uploaded on facebook, Senator Davis's pocket watch. The rest of the photos are of work studies and volunteers who have worked in the gallery. I am sorry that I don't have photos of everyone who has worked here. All of you have influenced the museum and we will continue when we open in July.
