Kump Corner--Summer Reading is Required to Reduce the “Reading Recession.”

Summer Tutoring can help kids develop reading skills they may have missed because of snow days and sick days during this last long winter. If you know students in grades 1-6 who could use some help with reading skills, send parents to register students for tutoring at Kump Education Center (across from Kroger in Elkins) Monday, June 15th between 3:00 & 6:00 p.m.

Reading scores are declining in many parts of the world, and the idea of a “Reading Recession” is in the news in different print media including The Economist, The Charleston Gazette, and our local Inter-Mountain. Randolph County reading scores have been among the lowest in the state of West Virginia during the years since the pandemic, and the decline may be even greater this year after a long winter when buses could not run because of ice and snow or the bus driver shortage.

The worldwide “Reading Recession” is coming at an inopportune time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing rapidly and taking jobs people have been doing. Human beings are being replaced by computers that can do work which required human intelligence in the past. Nevertheless, there will be a need for intelligent people who can recognize computer mistakes. Manual workers will have to read computer instructions to use and fix equipment on the job.

Reading is also a fundamental to human social skills. Intelligent workers will need good reading and math skills as well as good social skills to work with frustrated old people like me who are not so great with technology. Young people also need to read about characters who have suffered through embarrassments and even more serious emotional difficulties like the loss of a loved one.

However, school age children are spending too much time on screens when they need to learn to read. Scores are declining in Scandinavian countries where reading scores were among the best in the world. Old school methods of teaching reading with books are being brought back and children are not using the computer in school until the third grade.

Reading is helpful for a teenager who can identify with a character suffering emotionally. A reader can see their own situation from a more objective point of view of another person. Such sympathetic feelings help them understand other people and themselves more meaningfully. A good book is much more helpful than listening to a chatbot reinforcing self-delusion.

In order to help our tutors and students be more alert this summer, we have decided to schedule tutoring earlier in the day. We will work one-on-one for an hour each week over a four-week period between June 15 and July 15. Tutoring sessions will be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The fee for tutoring is $5 per hour, and scheduling adjustments may be made for family vacation weeks.

Kump Corner--Try Summer Tutoring because reading is still fundamental!

If you have a student in elementary grades (1-6) who could benefit from summer tutoring in reading, sign up at Kump Education Center (across from Kroger in Elkins) Monday, June 15th between 3:00 & 6:00 p.m.

Each student will plan to work with a tutor for an hour one day a week over a four-week period between June 16 and July 15. Tutoring sessions will be available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 3:00 & 6:00 p.m., or on Saturday between 10:00 & 12:00 p.m. The fee for tutoring is $5 per hour, and scheduling adjustments may be made for family vacation times.

Both parents and teachers are faced with the dilemma of deciding how to prepare the next generation to live in a world that is significantly different from the one we lived in twenty-five years ago. Nobody knows how the workplace will change, and we cannot predict what new skills young people will need to be happy and successful in 2050. We live in a time of transition when artificial intelligence challenges human intelligence.

Nevertheless, reading is still fundamental. The word fundamental includes both the words FUN and MENTAL. These are the two types of experiences that are necessary for children to learn to read. They must have fun with reading if they are expected to practice reading enough to gain skill and speed. Also, they must have confidence that their own minds are good enough to decode symbols and make sense of words on a page or on a screen.

We will help students to develop phonics skills they may have missed when school was out for Covid-19 or Snow Days over the last few years. These interruptions may have prevented them from developing skills during their critical learning phases of natural development. Individual attention allows tutors time to observe what each student can do with word recognition, sentence structure, and vocabulary as well as comprehension. Best of all, with buddy reading each student can read out loud to a tutor without suffering embarrassment with their peers, and they can share reading with an adult who reads with expression.

Our tutoring plan helps students have fun with the reading process. We use “buddy reading” with an adult to find the student’s current reading level and then expand their skills to the next level. During the reading process tutors converse with students to help them develop mental strategies to comprehend the meaning. Students will write down their answers with the tutor’s help. After tutors get to know their students, they will suggest books that students may enjoy at their new reading and interest levels.

The dark side of the story about not learning to read is what often happens to adults who are illiterate in our computer-loving society. Although computers use push button icons and other symbols besides letters, computer operation requires basic reading skills. Now almost all manual jobs require reading directions on paper or on a screen. New cars are repaired with computer monitoring devices, and even digging a large ditch quickly involves being able to read directions for a backhoe. We must help students in Randolph County read effectively if they are going to earn a living.

Kump Corner--Pepperoni Roll Pop-up

We never really know what creative ideas may pop up to help make learning activities available to more local students at Kump Education Center. The “Pepperoni Roll Pop-up” this Saturday was Laura Santmyer’s idea to help local students who might not have funding to pay full tuition for Spanish Camp.

Pepperoni rolls from Gino’s Pizza will be on sale, Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm in the old IGA parking lot. This parking lot now serves the Randolph County Commission Annex where early voting has been taking place. The pepperoni roll lunches will include two sides, a cookie, and a drink for $12.

When I think about Italian American pepperoni rolls helping West Virginia children learn to speak Spanish, it makes me realize what a wonderful, small world we have. I am so glad that Elkins is a place where caring volunteers will do the best they can to offer extra opportunities for children.

We still have volunteers for ArtsBank, Band Parents, Coaches for every sport from Baseball to Soccer, 4-H Leaders, PTA Officers, Read-Aloud Readers, Scout Leaders, Theater Volunteers, and Y Program Leaders. Randolph County Public Schools, Davis & Elkins College, and United Way all collaborate with Kump Center and send volunteers to work with KEC. Banks, insurance agencies, and stores often contribute to programs at Kump Center and the public schools.

When we read that the USA is so hopelessly divided now, we should look at our neighbors who sincerely care about the needs of children. Remember the old saying: “Actions speak louder than words.” We may not be in the same business, church, or political party, but we are still willing to volunteer and support learning opportunities for children.

George Washington said that he could always depend on his volunteers from these mountains. He also said American soldiers could not be “drove” (driven like cattle), but they could be led to unite and meet challenges facing his struggling nation 250 years ago.

As long as there are volunteers in American towns like Elkins, I can continue to support the sunburst logo designed by a student at Elkins High School several years ago: “Kump Education Center: Creating a brighter future.”
