Today, Friday, June 19, the Academy Art Museum is closed in observance of Juneteenth.

Join us tomorrow for our 16th annual Juneteenth celebration, a free community event with live performances, hands-on activities, giveaways, multiple exhibitions, a scavenger hunt, food, vendors, and more – for all ages!

Presented in partnership with Building African American Minds, the Frederick Douglass Honor Society, and the Talbot County Free Library.

📅 Saturday, June 20⏰ 12–4 PM📍 Academy Art Museum🎟 Free and open to all

This year’s celebration is themed around Easton’s historic Hill Community. Highlights include a guided tour of the Hill with Yvonne Freeman, a special installation featuring artifacts from the future Freeman Annex & Hormel Research Center, a teen creative writing showcase with Shore Lit, and a special artist talk with Tawny Chatmon at 3 PM.

On view through July 5, Tawny Chatmon: Private Collection of the Chatmon Family and Richard Marks & Amy Haines

Presented as a special exhibition during our Juneteenth celebration, this installation is intentionally positioned at the heart of the Museum’s programming.

As we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of America’s independence and examine themes of identity, belonging, and the evolving American story, her portraits have a profound resonance. By honoring Black youth, ancestry, and lived experience with dignity and splendor, Chatmon’s portraits affirm that America’s story is not singular, but plural. This exhibition not only celebrates Juneteenth, but also invites our community to consider how identity, heritage, and representation shape the nation we continue to build together.

🌈 This Pride Month, we’re celebrating Maryland artist Tom Miller (1945–2000) who was known for his vibrant murals, prints, and unmistakable use of color. A proud Baltimorean and openly gay artist, Miller’s work drew from Black history, personal storytelling, and the people and places that shaped his life.

We’re proud to care for several of his prints in the Academy Art Museum’s permanent collection. This June, we’re reflecting on the artists whose creativity, perspective, and lived experiences continue to enrich the stories art can tell.

A special behind-the-scenes afternoon with artist-in-residence Esteban del Valle. 🎨

Members of the Keller Collection Society gathered in Esteban’s working studio at the Waterfowl Building for an intimate artist talk, live painting demonstration, and cocktail reception—experiencing firsthand the creative process unfolding during the Academy Art Museum’s Summer Artist Residency.

The Keller Collection Society offers unique opportunities like this throughout the year, connecting members directly with artists, collectors, and the Museum’s permanent collection. Membership dues directly support acquisitions and conservation, helping shape the Museum’s legacy for future generations.

A limited number of spaces remain for the 2026–2027 season. Available to Sustainer-level members and above. Learn more and join us for a deeper experience of the Museum: academyartmuseum.org/support
