NOW ON VIEW | Julie Wills: The Bitter Pains

A look behind the scenes as The Bitter Pains took shape in the Selections Gallery.

Through text fragments, sculptural forms and cast-off materials from the building trades, artist Julie Wills explores love, loss and endurance—and the ways we build meaning in uncertain times.

The Bitter Pains is on view now through Nov. 8.

We were delighted to host a sold-out Introduction to Wet Plate Collodion Photography workshop with exhibiting artist Lisa Elmaleh, where participants explored one of photography’s earliest–and most captivating–processes, creating their own one-of-a-kind images by hand.

There’s still time to experience Lisa Elmaleh: Promised Land, but not for long, the exhibition closes Sunday, August 9.

Join us for First Friday Gallery Crawl, when the Museum will be open late, and take one last look at this powerful exhibition.

🗽 “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...”

Those powerful opening words of The New Colossus inspired this year’s Academy Art Museum Teen Council exhibition, a thoughtful exploration of identity, belonging, freedom, and hope through the voices of the next generation.

Earlier this summer, we celebrated the opening of The New Colossus, the culminating exhibition of the Academy Art Museum’s 2026 Teen Council—on view through August 9.

Over five months, eleven high school students from Maryland’s Mid-Shore region immersed themselves in the Museum’s permanent collection before selecting the artworks, designing the gallery, and writing original exhibition labels. The result is a moving exhibition that invites us to consider who we are, where we belong, and the stories we choose to carry forward.

A special thank you to Jessica Newell, our Education & Programs Specialist, for her mentorship and dedication in guiding this talented group of young curators and helping bring their vision to life.
