Aaron Uzzle creates power vessels—assemblages that protect, guide, and empower. Scraps of secondhand goods, discarded materials, forgotten things are combined into one glorious form and given a second life and higher purpose.

His artistic practice is emotional and spiritual catharsis. It is agency in an exploitative landscape. Feathers, beads, textiles, found objects—materials that carry history—are transformed into vessels of power, ornament, and sacred protection.

His work reclaims, protects, and empowers.

James Stephen Terrell, a Washingtonian artist with dual training in fine arts and theology, creates work that investigates both physical and spiritual reality.

He studied fine arts at Howard University and Parsons, then pursued a Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary—focusing specifically on theology and the fine arts. His practice sits at that intersection: art as visual language for what exists beneath the surface, pattern and texture as spiritual current.

In Wade in the Water, two figures stand in baptismal waters beneath a sky built entirely from collaged patterns.

Checkerboards, cosmic prints, tie-dye, florals, African fabrics—all layered to create what Terrell calls "a visual ride through the silent places between thought, allowing revelation and transformation."

One cleansed in the purifying waters of baptismal forgiveness.

Acquisition announcement. 🔴🔴

Congratulations to Artist Angela Franklin .angelacarolefranklin on the sale of her beautiful artwork “Pour First from a Full Cup and a Full Soul”.

This intricate, layered fabric piece invites us to think about the need to replenish ourselves, as we replenish others.

Congratulations to this new Spiralis collector. The placement of this piece in a waterfront home in this area, in full view of the nourishing waters of the Chesapeake Bay, is extraordinary. One more week to view Angela’s other work at the gallery!

"When you think about Easton and you think about water... that's how we got here. African Americans, we did not fly here. We didn't take a bus or a train or a horse. We came from the water."

Artist and former NEA civil rights educator Genevieve Phelps on creating her piece, "The Sinking of the Last Slave Ship"and realizing why it belongs in Easton as part of "Shall We Gather at the River."

This is the final week to see the exhibition - closes May 31.

"Ceramics is my form of journalism. It is how I tell and unearth the stories of the past, of the present and inform the future."

Margery Cedano, ceramicist, daughter of immigrants, storyteller, on falling in love with clay, unearthing stories of past and present, and working with a material that can last thousands of years.

From last weekend's artist talk for 'Shall We Gather at the River', closing May 31.

Don't miss the final week!

Genevieve Phelps creates art quilts that preserve African American history through vivid colors, African print fabrics, and layered stitching.

A former educator and civil rights advocate, she returned to artmaking upon retirement—using textile to tell stories that must be remembered. Her work, in her words, aims "to preserve history, honor cultural memory, and tell stories through layered stitching and textile art."

The Sinking of the Last Slave Ship (shown here) uses fabric and pattern to mark what water holds—the Middle Passage, the ship sinking, the lives lost.

Less than two weeks left!

After that, this show is gone—the work disperses, the walls change, and you'll have missed 'Shall We Gather at the River'.

Water as passage. Water as memory. Water as keeper of what happened and what we carry forward.

Works including Queen Leia Lewis's Middle Passage ship holds, James Terrell's baptismal collages, Genevieve Phelps's textile histories, Angela Franklin's pouring from full cups. This is the art you need to see in person.

Don't miss it.
