Spend a Sunday learning the meditative art of Chinese ink painting with instructor Quanzhou (Jack) Zhao.

In Resonance of Ink and Brush, a full-day workshop on Sunday, October 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jack will guide you from your first brushstroke to a finished landscape. You’ll learn the Four Treasures of the Study, paint the orchid, bamboo and plum blossom of the “Four Gentlemen,” and end the day with the classic composition “Solitary Angler by the Stream.”

Join us Saturday, October 17 at 1:00 PM for a guided tour of the galleries that doubles as a bingo game. Listen as our "caller" shares stories about the art, and check off each object on your card as you spot it. Prizes go to the first family to complete a row and the first to fill the whole card! Afterward, head to the studio for a hands-on Art Cart activity. Bingo cards provided, all ages welcome.

Today’s Collection Spotlight features a historic Ming dynasty Chinese scroll on view in Interpreting the Natural. This ink brush landscape painting shows a cliff dotted with vegetation, a rushing waterfall, and a quiet scholar tucked into the trees below.

Painted by Shen Zhou—a central figure of the Suzhou-based Wu School—this ink landscape seamlessly integrates painting, poetry, and calligraphy: the "Three Perfections" used by scholar-artists to express their mind and spirit.

Rock and rocks, all in one night!

Join us Thursday, October 15 at 5 PM for a performance by The Ladybugs, a four-piece rock band from Duxbury with support from South Shore Conservatory. The band is Ivy Krebs on drums, Kaylan Albertson on bass, Liv Bowden on guitar, and Katia Semyrog on keys. Their setlist runs from The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and Oasis to The Warning, plus original songs written by band members. Their four-part vocal harmonies are the icing on the cake!

After the music, Robert D. Mowry, PhD, Curator Emeritus of Chinese Art at Harvard Art Museums, shares the stories behind China's prized scholars' rocks. The talk is for the art-curious, stone novices, and devoted lithophiles alike.
