Little Village is pleased to announce City Sculpture: Robert Sestok, a site-specific installation of 16 large-scale sculptures spanning several decades of work by the Detroit-based artist, nestled within the grounds of River Trail. Photographed by Detroit Photographer

For more than five decades, Sestok has taken a deconstructive approach across painting, multimedia and welded steel. He came up as part of the Cass Corridor movement, a generation of artists working in that neighborhood in the 1960s and 70s.

City Sculpture is a nonprofit organization founded on a conviction that ambitious art belongs within a neighborhood, encountered freely and without ceremony. City Sculpture was generously supported by Gretchen and Ethan Davidson.

Join us Thursday, September 3 from 5–7pm to celebrate the opening of River Trail and the kickoff of Detroit Month of Design, in partnership with Design Core.

We’re proud to announce River Trail, an 8-acre community space at 9300 Kercheval, on the corner of Kercheval and McClellan. ⁠
⁠
Pathways weave and intersect across the site, connecting visitors to accessible gathering spaces and public art while linking them to landmarks throughout the corridor. Designed by , River Trail will feature an exhibition of interactive installations alongside a dedicated trail of public sculpture by Detroit-based artist Robert Sestok.⁠

River Trail provides an opportunity to strengthen connections between the corridor’s landmarks, from Pewabic and the LANTERN to Cadillac Arts Centre and the Shepherd, eventually extending to the waterfront at Stanton Yards. In this way, River Trail organizes a rich chorus of voices across the corridor into a cohesive network of movement while responding to resident interests in safe and engaging spaces.⁠

River Trail honors the dedication and leadership of residents Delores Orr and Martha Coates, and the Association. ⁠

The space officially opens to the public on Thursday, September 3rd from 5–7pm, hosting the grand opening event for Detroit Month of Design in partnership with Design Core. Join us for an evening celebrating art, community, and design. More to come!

Introducing Carlos Nielbock’s Detroit Windmill 3.0, now installed at the corner of McClellan & St. Paul in Detroit’s Little Village Cultural Corridor.

Detroit Windmill 3.0 is an upcycled vertical axis wind turbine built from recycled materials that blends heritage metalworking with cutting-edge sustainability. Designed and fabricated at his studio, the windmill stands as a symbol of innovation rooted in tradition - bringing together old-world craftsmanship, renewable energy, and the spirit of Detroit ingenuity.

The garden is a living installation and educational community space created by artist .

Join us on Saturday, June 27, from 10:30 AM–12 PM for a hands-on cyanotype workshop led by Amara Murphy (Amara Murphy). Using leaves, flowers, and stems freshly picked from the garden, participants will create their own botanical prints.

This family-friendly event welcomes children, parents, grandparents, and friends of all ages. RSVP is required through Amend’s page. Water, snacks, and lunch will be provided!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of architect and friend Lorcan O’Herlihy, whose impact on architecture will be widely remembered.

Lorcan believed architecture could do more than shape buildings; it could shape lives. He once shared: “I believe that architecture is a social act and that the role of the architect is to do work of consequence.”

Lorcan was passionate about the City of Detroit. He spent several years working on the design of a former convent in Little Village, which will soon be the new home for Library Street Collective and Louis Buhl & Co. We are grateful for knowing Lorcan and look forward to realizing his vision later this year.
