October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Title: 1st Safe Night Philadelphia Shelter, Women Against Abuse, 1986

Photojournalist Donna Ferrato has spent decades documenting the experiences of women and children affected by domestic violence. Rather than observing from a distance, Ferrato immersed herself in the lives of survivors, riding with police officers, staying in shelters, and sleeping on couches in their homes. Her photographs challenge the silence and stigma surrounding domestic violence, bringing experiences often hidden from public view into the light and fostering conversation about victims rights.
