Del Mar Historical Society

Del Mar Historical Society The founder of the Del Mar Historical Society was a gentleman named Harold (Swede) Throneson, affectionately known as Del Mar’s “Mr. History.” Swede moved to Del Mar in 1959 while he was on active duty with the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.

He and his wife rented a home on the beach for $150 a month, decided to buy a lot, built a home, and had a wonderful life in Del Mar. He retired after 21 years from the Marine Corps, taught elementary school for another 15 years, and then retired. He became involved in Del Mar history by accident. In conjunction with a local businessman, they were trying to come up with an idea to encourage people to go upstairs and patronize the shops at Stratford Square. Swede decided to put up old photographs. The idea worked so well that it is still there today. In Swede’s words “That’s when I got hooked.” There was no historical society at that time. He struck out on his own constantly collecting memorabilia, keeping files and making photographs. In 1985 the Del Mar Historical Society was born. The founders and signers of incorporation papers were Swede, Alice Goodkind, Cathy Wood, Jane Scroggins, Cal Scroggins, Nancy Ewing and Gerry Wood. Swede passed away at the age of 83 on the 30th of April 2000. He will be forever remembered as the person who started it all.

Did you know there used to be an official Drive-In movie theater in Del Mar (1953-1979 / 514 Via de la Valle)? Influences of the popular "Tiki" style of that time and this region shown in this pic.

Do you have any memories there? 😊🎬🎥🚗🏖️

"The Process" - The Dunham House Relocation 2020

The house had to be cut in half in order to be transported; therefore, the move took two days. On the first day, we started the process with gloomy skies and a little rain followed by warm sunshine upon her arrival to the San Dieguito Heritage Museum and Ranch!☔☀️

The San Dieguito Heritage Museum has graciously offered to provide land and a permanent home for our Del Mar 1885 Dunham House at their Heritage Ranch in Encinitas (you should visit!). This past Thursday a group of members from both the DMHS and the SDHM met at Heritage Ranch to discuss the exciting details and see the new location. We were also given a walking tour of the other buildings at the Ranch.

In the 1880's, Colonel Jacob Taylor named our seaside village "Del Mar" ("Of the Sea"). In that time, he built a luxury hotel called "Casa Del Mar" and wood cottages nearby. Sadly the hotel burned down in 1890, but a few original Del Mar 1880's cottages still exist! This is one of them, the Dunham House (1885) on Tenth St.🌷

DID YOU KNOW?:

The Stratford Inn and later the Hotel Del Mar hosted many Thanksgivings in the luxurious dining room overlooking the Pacific Ocean. “ Now, good digestion wait on appetite, and health on both!” ( Macbeth, Act 3, Scene 4) Shakespeare died in 1616, just a few years before the Thanksgiving at Plymouth Colony about 1621, William Bradford presiding. The old hotel site is now occupied by L'Auberge on the northwest corner of Camino del Mar and 15th Street.

Thank you, Nancy Ewing, for the book Del Mar Looking Back with the detailed history of our village.

Do you have a photo or two of life in an earlier Del Mar? If so, please share with us. We will digitize it, add it to our archives, and return the original to you. You can contact us with an email to [email protected], or by dropping a note in the box outside the Del Mar Community building at 225 9th Street.
