Square footage pricing. I’m honestly not a huge fan of it because the range is so massive. These windows only cost $8.50 per square foot. That’s a steal! A lot cheaper than vinyl.
However, yesterday I sent out a proposal for a mural that will cost over $100 per square foot.
So why is there such a huge range in pricing?
•Complexity- these windows have a lot of flat colors and simple designs. Easy to draw. Easy to paint. Also, easy to hire assistants to help.
•Quantity- Since there were so many windows, we could use huge rollers to do the base coats and paint multiple areas at the same time.
•Accessibility- Anything that requires a scissor lift, boom or extension ladder will be more expensive and slower to paint.
• Red tape- if a contract requires a lot office work, the price is going up. COI, DIR, licenses, contracts… you know the drill.
• Chill factor- if you’re rad, I’m giving you a discount because I’ll have a lot of fun working with you. Honestly though, if you like a client, everything runs more smoothly. Creating sketches and revisions and changes are all much more enjoyable with someone who gets you.
So how do I charge if not by square footage? Time. I figure out how many days a project will take and how much I expect to make each day. If I’m working outdoors 50’ up on a scissor lift, the price will be higher than if I’m in your air conditioned house with your cute dog.
Then I imagine getting home at the end of the day and thinking about how much money I made that day. Am I stoked? Do I feel like I’m making good money for my skill level? And almost more importantly, does my client feel pumped about the final product? Did I make their artistic dreams come true for a fair price? If yes, then I feel good about the money I’m making.
I’m not here to give sage business advice or help you make a million dollars. My goal is to be a good person and get to make some unique art for cool people and make enough money to buy plane tickets for me, golf rounds for my wife and send my kids to college. ;)
