On January 1, 2019, the Pizzuti Collection organization merged with the Columbus Museum of Art, and is now under the leadership of the Museum.

Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti is CMA’s campus in the Short North Arts District, advancing the museum’s commitment to contemporary art through exhibitions, performances, and public programs. The merger included acquisition of the building. While the art comes from the family collection, as a nonprofit arts organization the Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti belongs to the community.

Artist Tavares Strachan defines himself as an explorer—born in the Bahamas, he has traveled to the North Pole and trained as a cosmonaut in Star City, Russia.

Strachan’s sculpture “Robert” pays homage to one of the Black explorers who came before him.

Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., the first Black U.S. astronaut, was killed in a supersonic jet crash in 1967 before he could travel to outer space.

Lawrence’s story also has a connection to Columbus: While serving in the U.S. Air Force, Lawrence completed a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from The Ohio State University.

With this neon sculpture, Strachan honors Lawrence by portraying him as a ghostly, illuminated circulatory system, suspended as if hovering in midair.

See “Robert” and discover more about Lawrence’s story on your next visit to CMA at The Pizzuti.

On September 25, 1923, thousands lined Columbus’s Mount Vernon Avenue for a parade honoring Marcus Garvey who was visiting the city on a nationwide tour. No photographs exist of this historic event, but sixty years later Aminah Robinson included the parade in a mural commissioned by the Columbus Metropolitan Library.

To mark the anniversary of the parade, Africana Studies Professor Dr. Mark Christian and COSI CEO and President Dr. Frederic Bertley will join us to discuss the endurance of Garvey’s legacy with a focus on the Universal Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.), the Pan-African liberationist organization Garvey co-founded with his wife, Amy Ashwood Garvey.

Saturday, September 26, 4:00–6:00 PM
4:00 PM—Reception in “Bar Room”
5:00 PM—Conversation
Free for members, $10 for nonmembers
At The Pizzuti

This history is personal for our speakers. Dr. Christian’s grandfather, George Rupert Christian, was one of the organizers of Columbus’s 1923 parade, while Dr. Bertley’s father, historian Dr. Leo Bertley, co-founded Montreal’s U.N.I.A. chapter and Garvey Institute.

Moderated by CMA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Daniel Marcus, their conversation will connect Columbus history to global history and consider how the ideals of Garveyism and the U.N.I.A. resonate more than a century later.

Meet Sky Juice: an OG Bahamian cocktail with gin, coconut, and a touch of fall spice—served in a party-ready pouch.

Discover Sky Juice inside "Bar Room,” a cocktail bar and café by artist Tavares Strachan—permanently installed at The Pizzuti. Inspired by the neighborhood rum bars of Strachan’s youth in the Bahamas, this one-of-a-kind installation reimagines the museum as a space where friends and neighbors share a drink, shoot a game of pool, and connect with culture through all their senses.

Have you seen the monumental work connecting Tavares Strachan’s exhibition across both CMA locations?

Tavares Strachan’s “In Praise of Midnight (Christophe x Napoleon)" (2025) is a sixteen-foot-tall double equestrian statue pairing two larger-than-life figures: Haitian revolutionary leader Henri Christophe and French emperor and general Napoleon Bonaparte.

Strachan’s pairing of these men, who were military adversaries, represents contrasting but related endeavors: liberation and colonization. In 1791, Christophe joined the slave revolt against French colonial rule over Haiti, becoming a freedom fighter and military leader in the ensuing revolution. After France’s defeat, he was crowned Haiti’s first and only king.

Installed in CMA’s East Broad Street atrium, this towering monument extends "Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began," on view now at , CMA’s campus in the Short North Arts District.

See Tavares Strachan’s work across both CMA locations—save this post as your reminder to experience both.
