In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're spotlighting scientists, engineers and creators whose work is helping us better understand our world: Meet Dr. Olivia Aguilar! 🌎

Dr. Olivia Aguilar is a professor of environmental studies at Mount Holyoke College. She studies the relationship between people and the natural world. Her work also looks at how people from different backgrounds learn about science and the environment. She works with communities to create more welcoming spaces where everyone can share their experiences while learning about the environment.

Science is shaped by the questions we ask and the perspectives we bring to them. 👏 Thank you, Dr. Aguilar, for helping make environmental science more inclusive.

During our closure, we weren’t just taking care of the physical fossils. We were also creating digital versions of them! 🦖 🦴 📸

As part of our annual fossil maintenance, visiting curators had the opportunity to make detailed 3D scans of American Museum of Natural History specimens in the COSI gallery! These scans provide digital records that can support future study and research. 🧑‍💻 They could even be used to create casts of the original specimens. This opens up another way to share these fossils beyond our walls, giving more communities the opportunity to study and learn from the fossils’ stories while helping protect the originals.

Preserving these fossils is one way we can be good stewards of the history they hold. Thank you to the AMNH team for their work! 🎉

Real rats. Real basketball. 🐀🏀 Curious how this classic got started? ⤵️

In 1984, our education team was watching a TV show called “That’s Incredible” featuring a young girl who had trained rats to play basketball for a school project and they were immediately obsessed! 🤩 At the time, the team was working to develop a sports psychology exhibit and knew rats playing basketball would be the perfect addition. She came to the museum to train our team, and the rest is history! Little did we know that it would stay a daily favorite for decades.

These fossils have had a pretty busy month! 🦴

During our annual closure, fossil curators from AMNH joined our team to clean, assess and repair the specimens from the American Museum of Natural History that are on display in the Dinosaur Gallery here at COSI. This kind of maintenance is an important part of preserving these pieces of Earth’s history and making sure they remain ready for research, exhibits and future generations of visitors!

'Gigantic', our sculpture by CCAD’s Tim Rietenbach has been keeping watch over COSI for almost 20 years! During our annual closure, he always gets some much-needed maintenance before welcoming you back.
