Think these are blades of grass? Look again! This 1880s photo shows rows and rows of drying baleen, which is what whales like humpbacks and right whales use to filter food from the water. Baleen was highly sought after for its strong, supportive structure, useful in many products from women's fashion to umbrellas and fishing rods.

One bowhead whale could have about 700 baleen plates weighing 3,500 pounds. Selling at $3 a pound (peaking at $5), that was quite a payoff in 1800's prices. Unfortunately, this demand pushed right whale populations to collapse. Spring steel emerged as an alternative to baleen, and by 1912, baleen was selling for mere pennies.

In honor of National Lobster Day (September 25th) we’re celebrating the startlingly salty history of America’s lobster fishery. Discover the surprising reason “lobster back” was a colonial insult for British soldiers and learn about local Long Island lobster populations. Sip a layered “Lobster Trap” cocktail or mocktail as you decorate a weathered wooden buoy you can use to add a touch of nautical flair to your home!

We’ve received a fantastic donation of two items: a whale vertebra found in the Long Island Sound, and a natural sea sponge. These two amazing objects will help our educators teach about marine anatomy in our future programs!

Did you know? All marine mammal parts, like whale bones, have been protected under federal law since 1972. This means they cannot be bought or sold; Antique items may be possessed, but commercial sale is restricted and requires documentation proving their pre-ban age. Museums like ours preserve these items so the public can learn from them for generations to come.

Spot a sponge on the reef? Be sure to leave it where it belongs! They play a critical role in filtering ocean water and creating reefs for marine life. Wild sponge harvesting is strictly regulated by state and marine sanctuary laws to prevent overharvesting. With our new addition, visitors can appreciate just how unique these creatures are up close.
