Today, we pause to reflect on the history and traditions surrounding Columbus Day, and to honor the Indigenous peoples whose lives, lands, and cultures were profoundly changed by European colonization.
For many, Columbus Day is a time to celebrate Italian-American heritage and the lasting contributions of Italian Americans to our communities. Alongside it, Indigenous Peoples' Day invites us to recognize the histories, resilience, and enduring presence of Indigenous communities, whose contributions continue to shape our world.
At the Huntington African American Museum, we believe that understanding history means making room for many perspectives. It means acknowledging the past with honesty and lifting up the voices of communities whose stories have too often gone unheard.
This October, we invite you to reflect, to learn, and to engage in conversations that deepen understanding, respect, and connection across our community.
