From 1948-1995, this Cincinnati store was a hometown go-to source for buying appliances, home goods and electronics. Who remembers the name of the store...and where was its flagship store located?

Setting type and imagery by hand is painstakingly slow sometimes…but so worth the effort!. Thanks to Cincinnati-area printing companies, letterpress enthusiasts, and the families of printers, almost all of our imagery and type fonts have been donated to the museum.

What would you like to create and print when you schedule your tour at our site in Lower Price Hill? Let us know and we’ll see if we have it in our collection. Set up a (free!) tour at 513-941-5722.

Workhorse? Indeed? The Showcard proof press is a workhorse piece of equipment (no pun intended) at our Lower Price Hill Museum. It’s where we test layouts, fonts, spacing and other elements of good printing design.

Here, a letterpress image plate (left) of a horse is laid out, adjusted and held in place by powerful magnets. Once rolled with ink, the printed image then gets eyeballed. Is it straight? Is the ink applied equally? Does the layout need to be adjusted?

Tie on a printer’s apron and try the Showcard firsthand when you (and your group, homeschool class, family, friends) schedule a free tour today at 513-914-5722. Donations are accepted.

Which iconic Cincinnati brand is this?
Letterpress printers quickly embrace a special skill: The ability to read backwards so that the resulting printed words support left-to-right reading. Quick: which iconic Cincinnati beer brewer is this? (Note: almost all of the metal/wooden type and imagery in our collection have been donated by local printers or individuals whose family members worked in the printing industry).

I wanted to share that I had an incredible experience this weekend. I was able to travel back to 1453 and assist Johannes Gutenberg with the printing of his Bible. It was truly a thrill.
