Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a network of artist-run spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each space is independently operated and focuses on presenting a varied program of emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is to collecti

vely bring people together, expand connections and build community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities. We seek to further empower the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer; and to act as an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market. Our exhibitions and projects have been featured in numerous print and online publications including The New York Times, The Chicago Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Hyperallergic, Art F City, The Huffington Post, L Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, Two Coats of Paint, Artinfo, Artnet News, Beautiful Decay, and the artblog. Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a 501c3 federally tax-exempt non-profit arts organization.

Today we are introducing you all to Jia Sung (), who we commissioned to create a drawing for our limited edition shirts that are on sale now.

Jia Sung is a Singaporean Chinese artist and educator whose practice spans painting, artist books, textiles, and printmaking. Drawing on motifs from Chinese mythology and Buddhist iconography, Sung uses the familiar visual language of folklore to examine and subvert conventional archetypes of femininity, queerness and otherness. Her work has appeared in publications including The Paris Review, Emergence Magazine, Astra Magazine, the Poetry Foundation, and the Asian American Writers Workshop, and collected by institutions including the Met, SFMOMA, and the Special Collections at Yale, SAIC, and RISD. She is the author of Trickster's Journey, a tarot deck and guidebook, published with Running Press in 2023. She has taught workshops with organizations like the Hudson River Museum, MoMA, and NYU. She was a 2018-2019 Smack Mellon Studio Artist and Van Lier Fellow, and is currently an adjunct professor at RISD, where she received her BFA in 2015.

They are only available until Dec 4th so get yours now! We are offering a variety of t shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts. All proceeds support Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s programming at our five locations throughout the year.

Support Tiger Strikes Asteroid by purchasing one of these stylish limited-edition shirts! Just in time for the holiday season!

These shirts feature a beautiful drawing we commissioned by NY based artist Jia Sung (). They are only available until Dec 4th so get yours now! We are offering a variety of t shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts.

All proceeds support Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s programming at our five locations throughout the year.

Since our founding in 2009, we’ve grown from a small space in Philadelphia to an expansive network of spaces with locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Greenville, SC. To date, we’ve organized almost 400 exhibitions/projects and have shown the work of over 2000 artists. We’ve organized large scale projects such as Artist-Run in Miami, where we invited artist-run spaces from all over the world to transform a room in an abandoned hotel during Basel week. During the beginning of the pandemic we used our spaces as artist residencies, giving artists the time and space to focus on their work during a difficult time. We also organized about 20 printable exhibitions through a new platform called TSA_PDF. We've given many artists their first solo shows and reviews of their work in the press.

Please consider purchasing one of these beautiful shirts and help us continue our work! Together we can build and sustain a slice of the art world that we can all be proud of.

RECEPTION THIS SATURDAY!
Places (Edition I): A solo exhibition by Bryana
Bibbs
October 14 - November 18
Reception: Oct 14, 1-4 pm
The We Were Never Alone Project weaving workshop: Nov 5, 1 - 4 pm, RSVP required. See bio for the link.
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago is pleased to present Places (Edition I), a solo exhibition of select “Journal Series” weavings and Polaroid photos by Bryana Bibbs (). The exhibition is curated by Debra Kayes (), TSA CHI member and co-director.
The works in this exhibition were made between 2022 and 2023, during Bibbs’s travels driving from Chicago to Maine and Tennessee for residencies, work, and vacation. In her ongoing
“Journal Series” weavings, Bibbs intuitively documents her personal experience using materials, colors, and textures. She makes her yarn using the traditional textile techniques of hand-carding and hand-spinning before hand-weaving them on her frame loom, and she incorporates collected found objects. In the works on view, Bibbs also includes objects that have been given to her, including fungi, shells, pine needles, and more. Bibbs has been steadily building an archive of Polaroids that share evidence of her process and her travels. This exhibition is the first time she will exhibit these documentary materials alongside the weavings they index.

“Tiger Strikes Asteroid (TSA) is the alternative gallery model that should be an art world standard: artist-centered, community-minded, flexible, national, and responsible. They fill a much needed gap in the industry—one that privileges the collective advancement of co-operative achievement and progressive institutional structures.

“Independent and non-commercial spaces that support experimental work by lesser known artists, frequently from underrepresented populations, as Tiger Strikes Asteroid has for fourteen years, typically suffer one of two maladies. They either follow a path of legitimacy via growth and institutionalization and, ultimately, stagnation. Or they remain marginal, precarious, and finally short-lived. Either path too often leads to predictability and eventual irrelevance. By contrast TSA–meaning the hundreds of culture workers in aggregate that contributed to it over the years–has forged a new way: accessible and grassroots, on the one hand, and intellectually exciting, weighty and influential, on the other.”

Join artist and writer, Dan S. Wang, in supporting TSA, today!.)

We need your help to keep Tiger Strikes Asteroid running! For as little as $5/month you can help our organization continue to be a vital platform for artist-initiated exhibitions and projects. As a thank you, we’ll send you some TSA swag annually, which includes totes, t-shirts, and even small works of art! “I support TSA because they bring an uncompromising and diverse representation of all that art is and can be. If you believe in a more democratic art world, an art world that represents all people, not just a handful, then we need to put everything we've got into TSA. Because we need more organizations like them, not less.”

As emerging and mid-tier galleries continue to shutter, there are fewer opportunities for artists to exhibit. We believe that our work is vital in providing an alternative platform for both emerging and established artists to show and exchange ideas about their work. As we finish up our 14th year we are looking for ways to keep our organization sustainable. While we have been fortunate enough to receive grant funding over the past few years, we know that relying solely on grants is not financially sustainable. That’s why having a stable source of revenue is crucial for us to be able to plan for the future. With consistent monthly donations from you we will be able to count on having the budget for network-wide operating expenses such as fine art insurance, documentation of our projects, shipping, and other administrative costs.

Please join us and help us continue our work! Together we can continue to create and sustain a slice of the art world that we can all be proud of.
