This Memorial Day, we honor those fallen in service to our country. One of our TVRM volunteers, Scott, now departed, served proudly at Khe Sanh in Vietnam, TVRM Memorial Day and Founder’s day events, and was proudest to share his stories of comrades at Khe Sanh and see the 4501 continue a legacy of teaching to the next generation. Thank you to all of our supporters for keeping memories, service, and history alive.

Two ways to ride the Hiwassee this weekend — both departing from Delano, TN.

Hiwassee Loop — A 50-mile round trip through the lower Hiwassee River Gorge, up to the Great Bald Mountain Loop near Farner, where the tracks corkscrew up the mountain and cross over themselves on a bridge 62 feet above the rails you just traveled. One of only two complete railroad loops in the United States. About 4½ hours.

Copperhill Special — The same spectacular Loop ride, then continuing on through Turtletown and Ducktown to the twin border towns of Copperhill, TN and McCaysville, GA. Have lunch on your own during a 90-minute layover, then ride back through the gorge. 94 miles round trip. A full day on a heritage railroad.
Seats are available for next weekend. Book at https://bit.ly/4uCVGci.

Both trips depart from Delano Depot — 9406 Highway 411, Delano, TN 37325. Not Chattanooga.

Due to a mechanical issue on 115-year-old steam engine 4501, diesel TAG 80 will assist the Summerville Steam Special on the return trip to Chattanooga. This will delay the train’s arrival back at Grand Junction Depot.

Frank Welsh shares a quick update on the freshly replaced compressor on Steam Engine 4501 just before she rolls out on the maiden journey opening the 2026 steam season at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

She said yes! We’re so happy for this sweet couple as they begin their journey together. It was an absolute honor for us to be the backdrop to such an unforgettable moment.

05/23/2026

Today, #4501 rolled out in her new, this-century paint scheme — another milestone in a year full of them. America marks 250 years, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum celebrates 65 years since incorporation, and it’s been 30 years since 4501 last wore this look.

And what better way to christen the moment than… a proposal?

That’s right — love is officially in the air. We’re honored that a young man chose our steam star as the backdrop for a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who made this project possible, including a generous gift from Scale Trains.

Red joins the roster. 🔴

The Southern 4501 paint job is rolling right along — quite literally. Every stripe of color brings her one step closer to her first green run to Summerville this Memorial Day weekend.
Stay tuned.
