✨Author | It's Possible: The Story of Ronald McNair

What inspired author Rita Lorraine Hubbard to write our recently published and Booklist starred review picture book, It's Possible: The Story of Ronald McNair?

"I remember being in college and taking a break in the student lounge when the image of the Challenger explosion appeared on the television. Like all the other students, I was glued to the television as I learned the story of the seven crew members aboard the Challenger. Years later, it has been an honor to share Dr. McNair’s life with young students everywhere, thanks to an invitation to write his story from Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center's Director of Education, Maranda Wilkinson.

During the 40th anniversary year of the Challenger tragedy, it’s important to remember ALL the crew members of the Challenger. All of them were special, but in my opinion, Ronald McNair’s story is singular because he rose up from poverty, segregation and preconceived opinions about minorities and accomplished many (if not all) his greatest dreams: a stellar education, music mastery… and a first-hand view of the stars." –Rita Lorraine Hubbard, Author

Pick up a copy of IT'S POSSIBLE for your home, school, or public library, and share Space Medal of Honor Recipient Ronald McNair's story of courage and commitment with the families and children in your lives. IT'S POSSIBLE is available at bookshop.org, amazon (worldwide), mohhc.org/childrens-books-resources/, and in-person at our gift shop.

Patriotism is not measured by words. It’s measured by sacrifice, courage, responsibility, and a willingness to stand for something bigger than yourself.

George Jordan understood that.

Born into slavery in Williamson County, Tennessee around 1847, Jordan later enlisted in the United States Army and became one of the legendary Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Cavalry. He led vastly outnumbered troops through impossible conditions, holding his ground and protecting the men around him under overwhelming enemy fire.

For his actions at Fort Tularosa and Carrizo Canyon, he was awarded the Medal of Honor — the nation’s highest recognition for valor.

Our education programs here at the Heritage Center identify patriotism as one of the six core values embodied by Medal of Honor Recipients alongside courage, integrity, sacrifice, commitment, and citizenship. We proudly partner with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society in teaching that patriotism is rooted in service, unity, citizenship, and living in a way that strengthens the community around you.

This summer, visitors to Chattanooga can experience these stories firsthand and reflect on the values that continue to shape generations: courage, integrity, sacrifice, citizenship, commitment, and patriotism.

The National Medal of Honor Heritage Center is honored to receive the Tennessee Association of Museums’ 2026 Award of Excellence for the Captain Larry Taylor Exhibit.

Located in downtown Chattanooga, this exhibit tells the incredible story of Medal of Honor Recipient Captain Larry Taylor and the courage, leadership, and selflessness he showed during the Vietnam War.

For visitors spending time in Chattanooga this summer, the exhibit offers more than a look at military history. It’s an opportunity to experience a deeply human story about sacrifice, service, and doing the right thing under impossible circumstances.

We’re grateful to the Tennessee Association of Museums for this recognition, thankful to everyone who helped bring the exhibit to life, and proud to continue sharing these stories with visitors from across the country every day.
