The gallery provides a thoughtful platform for contemporary art to be experienced, discussed, and acquired. Southern Comfort Gallery (SOCO) is a contemporary art space and bookshop based in Charlotte, North Carolina. SOCO Gallery produces exhibitions and represents artists working locally, nationally, and internationally at the highest levels. The gallery specializes in assisting private collectors, institutions, and corporations to build their collections with museum-quality artworks, from emerging to established artists. Community engagement and education are central to the mission of the gallery. Each exhibition includes artist talks, book signings, and related programming. Amir H. Fallah was born in Tehran, Iran, received his BFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA from University of California, Los Angeles. Fallah’s upbringing as an immigrant has always influenced his artwork, manifesting itself in his use of Persian patterns or symbolism, evident across the various mediums he employs.

Corey Pemberton・Face Jug in the Rain #1・2026・blown glass and house paint・24 x 10 x 10 inches

Corey Pemberton’s face jugs combine a mixture of blown and painted glass. The patterns portrayed on the jugs reference the historical log cabin quilt design, a symbol of safe houses along the Underground Railroad. The playful facial expressions evoked through the lips, eyes, and mouth, create a playful and human connection to the rich history.

Jackie received her BFA from Washington University, St. Louis in 1996 and her MFA from Yale University in 1998. Her work incorporates influences from Art Deco, German Expressionism, Futurism, Constructivism, and more to craft narratives of figures within space. She is currently the Painting Department Graduate Program Director and an Associate Professor of Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Amir H. Fallah・This Too Shall Pass・2025・acrylic on canvas・36 x 36 inches

In ‘This Too Shall Pass’, Fallah crafts a roughly symmetrical composition of multiple figures that is then cut by a central floral shape reminiscent of that of an Islamic mihrab, while the figures sit on a large saturated shape not dissimilar to that of a Persian carpet. The narrative is both fractured and cohesive, made of seemingly unrelated elements and figures, united by a common, lush, botanical environment.

Fallah was born in Tehran in 1979, the same year as the Iranian Revolution and a time of a significant political and historical shift. His work has always reflected his identity and experience as a young immigrant. In ‘What The Wind Carries’, Fallah interprets these same experiences and narratives but through the universal language of flora and fauna.

We are pleased to announce Sophie Treppendahl’s upcoming exhibition ‘After the Dinner Party.’

The paintings presented in ‘After the Dinner Party’ are a love letter to the act of lingering. Inspired by the frequent dinner parties Treppendahl hosts, the works invite the viewer to stay a while as they explore the beauty in everyday spaces made intimate by immersing oneself into settings of domestic tranquility and curated memories.

Sophie Treppendahl (b. 1991, Louisiana) received her BA in Painting and Printmaking, cm laude at the College of Charleston and is a painter whose works capture the beauty of the everyday through an exploration of light, color, and observational memory within domestic spaces. Treppendahl’s recent exhibitions include “O Sole Mio” (2025) at Art Basel (Miami, FL), “The Nearness of You” (2025) and “Take Care of Yourself” (2023) at the Philip Martin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), “A Closer Look” (2024) at Haverkampf Leistenschneider (Berlin, Germany) and “Chromotherapy” (2023) at the Jack Hanley Gallery (New York, NY). Sophie Treppendahl’s work was also featured in “What Our Critics Are Looking Forward to in 2024” in The New York Times front-page Art Section. She has been awarded residencies at the Golden Foundation (New Berlin, NY), 100 W Corsicana (Corsicana, TX), The Provincial (Chief, MI), and The Wassaic Project (Wassaic, NY).

Amir H. Fallah believes that the internal, psychological structure of a human is more descriptive of their personhood than their physical appearance could ever be. Because of this belief, his paintings often include aspects of his personal life, items he attributes sentimental meaning, or transitory thoughts that pass through his mind. The title of this piece, also found on the canvas, is a mantra that came to Fallah as he was watching the news while painting, allowing him to remain calm amidst the intensity of the world. The landscape in the upper right-hand quadrant is a depiction of a park in which he would sit and contemplate philosophical or heavy questions proposed to him by his son. It can be inferred that Fallah himself is located in the bottom left, observing the qualities, memories, and thoughts that make him who he is.

In ‘What The Wind Carries,’ Fallah explores narratives of identity, migration, and community through the greater integration of botanicals into his work. Flowers hold unique identities and meaning. Flowers appear windswept, the fruits of a migration. Each flower is presented in harmony as part of one functioning ecosystem, yet has migrated from every corner of the earth to be together. The botanicals become the subject throughout all of his maximalist compositions to craft narrative, instead of relying solely on the figure as an arbiter of meaning.

These glass works mark the first time Pemberton has incorporated basket weaving into his practice. Combined with African textile patterns and European vessel forms, these works reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of ancestry, family history, and cultural hybridity.

Congratulations to artists Scott Avett and Damian Stamer for their inclusion in “With a Southern Accent,” now on view at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC through August 15, 2027.

Scott Avett (b. 1976, Cheyenne, Wyoming) received his BFA from East Carolina University and is a multimedia artist whose figurative works explore banal, yet simply beautiful phases and moments in time. Internationally recognized as co-founder of the Grammy nominated band, The Avett Brothers, Scott Avett has been a working artist since 2000. Until now, his art-making has largely been a solitary creative pursuit in comparison to his life as a musician, singer, and songwriter. Avett’s large-scale canvases reveal an intimate look at growing up and now raising a family in the rural south. His works are infused with the personal moments and inspiration Avett draws from his family and their surrounding North Carolina farmland, yet are nuanced with the cultural and artistic influences he has encountered through years of life on the road.

Avett’s first museum exhibition opened at the North Carolina Museum of Art in 2019. This comprehensive exhibition highlighted his work across 20 years and spanned multiple disciplines, including painting, printmaking, and sculptural objects. An extensive hardbound catalog, Scott Avett: INVISIBLE, accompanied the exhibition with an in-depth look into the artist’s visual art practice and the parallels to his songwriting and music development. A second iteration of this exhibition opened at the Greenville Museum of Art in 2022, titled Scott Avett: After The Fact. Avett lives and works in North Carolina.

Damian Stamer (b. 1982, Durham, North Carolina) received his BFA from Arizona State University as a National Merit scholar and his MFA from UNC Chapel Hill as a Jacob K. Javitz fellow. He studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design as a Rotary Ambassadorial scholar and at the University of Fine Arts Budapest as a Fulbright grantee. Stamer was awarded the Budapest Art Factory International Artist Residency and the North Carolina Arts Council Arts Fellowship in 2017 and 2014, respectively
