Something new is blooming at Discovery Place Science 🌿

"Mending the Wild" opens August 29, bringing more than two dozen works by Charlotte artist Tina Alberni into our halls. Using reclaimed fabric, paper and paint, Alberni explores conservation, biodiversity and what it means to coexist with the natural world around us.

Each piece is an act of mending – a reminder that what we consume and how we build can help preserve the world we share.

On view daily through December 31, included with Museum admission and membership. Come see it for yourself on your next visit! 🎨

Mending the Wild is organized by Nine Eighteen Nine Studio Gallery Studio Gallery, a Charlotte-based artist advocacy and community arts organization located within the The VAPA Center.

Meet three Solar System Ambassadors sharing their equipment and their journeys into astronomy. And don’t miss Label-Free STEAM from UNC Charlotte, diving into optics (the physics behind how telescopes see) and championing inclusivity in STEM. Free with admission – plan your visit!

Your favorite field trip destination just became your child’s future career pipeline…

We’ve launched Next Gen Collective – a new museum-wide initiative that follows students from their very first field trip all the way to a career in STEM. Because we believe curiosity shouldn't stop at the exit doors.

Through Next Gen Collective, youth in grades 6–12 can explore, mentor, lead and eventually land paid internships with Discovery Place.

First up: Next Gen Explorers kicks off September 19 with a "science of pirates" workshop for middle schoolers, and September 20 with forensic science for high schoolers.

🧱 LEGO® Build & Talk gives families a reason to slow down, build something together and talk through digital topics that can often be harder to bring up. Build your character, pick a topic and get building – all while discussing some of the most pressing issues facing children today: online safety and digital wellbeing.

Meet the moon jellies living two totally different lives in one lifetime. 🪼

Our moon jellies are Scyphozoans, a type of jellyfish with a wild life cycle: they start out as tiny stationary polyps attached to a surface, then eventually transform into free-swimming medusae (what you picture when you hear “jellyfish”). Not every jellyfish goes through this shape-shifting process, which makes it one of our favorite evolutionary quirks to show off.

Our in-house propagation program lets us grow moon jellies through every stage of that journey, right here on-site. And the jellies don’t just stay with us – we’ve shared jellies with other facilities across the region, and partnered with a biology professor at UNC Charlotte who uses different life stages in her student labs, plus researchers studying everything from epigenetics to heavy metal contamination. 🔬
