Cape Charles Museum and Welcome Center

Cape Charles Museum and Welcome Center The Cape Charles Museum opened in 1996 & operates solely from donations. Consider a membership today. We close from the end of November until April.

As part of its mission, the Society collects and records memories of older residents and notable events, which can be listened to at the Museum. We welcome donations of documents, artifacts, postcards, etc related to the history of the area. Twice each year the Historical Society holds fundraising events: a Low Country Shrimp Boil on the Saturday of Garden Week, the last weekend in April, and an O

yster Roast on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. COVID caused us to cancel these events in 2020 and we are unsure how it will affect them in 2021. Contact us by email at [email protected] or [email protected] or message us on Facebook. Call the Museum for current information at 757-331-1008 and leave a message. Cape Charles is readily accessible from the Norfolk - Virginia Beach area and from Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore. Take U.S. 13 and follow signs to Cape Charles, about 10 miles north of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Go west on State Route 184. The Museum is 1.8 miles from the intersection of Rt. 13 and Rt. 184, a tall brick building on the south (left) side of the road as you enter the town, just past the water tower.

There’s something powerful about how history can be told—not just through facts and artifacts, but through creativity, emotion, and lived experience.

As a museum, we’re proud to preserve and present history through carefully curated displays. But we also want to take a moment to recognize and thank our friends at the Arts Enter Cape Charles for bringing history to life in such a dynamic and artistic way. Your work reminds us that the past isn’t just something to observe—it’s something to feel, interpret, and connect with on a deeper level.

Together, these different approaches enrich our community’s understanding of where we’ve been and who we are. We’re grateful to be part of that shared mission.

Thank you for inspiring new ways to experience history.

Rays of sunshine cast down over the Cape Charles Museum and President Dunton excepting the proceeds. Notice the lighthouse-water tower in the reflection. Please stop in the museum and check it out. They are making improvements, adding on and doing great things here!
Thank you!
