In Memory of John Griffith

John Griffith wasn’t just a past president of the Cape Charles Museum. He wasn’t just a board member, or a Super Saturday museum docent. John was an all-around good guy—and someone who truly loved Cape Charles.

John had a way of connecting the Cape Charles of old with the Cape Charles of new. He took tremendous pride in this town and thoroughly enjoyed volunteering his time to make sure others knew what Cape Charles was, where we came from, and what made this place so special.

He had a gift for telling our story and, more importantly, for making people want to hear it. I know John played a big part in piquing my own interest in wanting to do more for the Museum and for preserving the history of our town.

One of the things I enjoyed most was watching John connect people from his generation with the younger generation that is now stepping up and taking the reins in preserving our history. He understood that history isn’t just about looking backward—it’s about passing what we know forward.

That is part of John’s legacy.

He gave his time, his knowledge, his pride, and his love for Cape Charles to all of us. The Cape Charles Museum and Historical Society is a better place because of him, and our community is better for having had him in it.

John will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Jen Griff know that you are our family too, and the Museum community stands with you.

John, fair winds and following seas, my friend.

You will not be forgotten.

Thank you Municipal Corporation of Cape Charles and to all that bid and how about the talented people who decorated those boots. We are lucky to have such talent in such a small area. And another big thank you for Cape Charles bringing back the Fall Festival, anyone around here in the 70’s and 80’s remembers how it was such a fun day for us. You guys and gals are awesome!!!

It’s support your local chamber of commerce day, before chambers you had individuals that promoted the area that they loved, and here on the Shore that was Charles Franklin Russell, the name may seem familiar, and you would be correct, his family not only is still promoting the shore but getting information out to you on WESR 103.3. But getting back to Mr Russell, he sent out correspondence to local businesses, leaders and local women’s clubs to have a get together to form a Chamber to represent and promote our Shore, where did they meet, on the Ferry Pocahontas and sitting on that boat at the mouth of the Bay the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce was formed and Mr Russell served as its first president.

We have enjoyed going down memory lane with the previous Fall Festivals, thank you Municipal Corporation of Cape Charles for bringing it back. Here at the top we are looking east, yes that’s the Ice Plant in the back and of course the “Hump” to the right. We see Bob Bloxom and a Bob’s Mob shirt. Talking with Mr Bloxom is Mr Bailey, yep that’s right The Mr Bailey's Bait & Tackle. Bottom right tells me it’s the 1976 Fall Festival by her attire and of course tomorrow’s October 10th line up of activities on the left. Come on down and check it out.
