Our Brass Team volunteers spent nine months working to refurbish the ship’s binnacle. After sourcing materials from other ships and working with a manufacturer, Baker, Lyman & Co., Inc., it was Jerry Gauthier who finally was able to send us a gallon of new compass oil and replacement seals—all free of charge. The restored binnacle went back on display on January 31, 2009 and is still in our Visitor’s Center today!

The first photo is from April 19, 2008—thank you to our dedicated Brass Team volunteer, Rich Thrash for sharing it. If you’re interested in being a part of the Battleship’s volunteers, visit https://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/support/volunteer-intern/.
