The Battleship New Jersey is the longest, fastest, most decorated battleship in history. From 1943 to 1991, she served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the Persian Gulf. The mission of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is to restore, preserve, and exhibit the continuing history of the USS New Jersey and those who worked and served on her so their service will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

October 1969. Hospital Corpsman Second Class Robert J. Anderson prepares to X-ray a patient’s broken foot aboard Battleship New Jersey. At sea, a battleship had to work like a small city, because getting someone to shore was not always possible. Besides a hospital, the ship had its own dental office, bakery, barber shop, laundry, chapel and library. All of these spaces are open for you to explore.

In Battleship New Jersey’s Combat Engagement Center, the Tomahawk control panel has a keyhole labeled “Nuclear Perm to Fire.” The Navy’s long-standing policy is to neither confirm nor deny whether a specific ship carried nuclear weapons, so the answer has never been officially confirmed. October 1968. Captain George Shaw, commander of Task Force Clearwater, examines a piece of shrapnel from a 16-inch shell fired by Battleship New Jersey. The Navy formed Task Force Clearwater in February 1968 to keep rivers open and supply convoys moving in northern South Vietnam. The 16-inch rounds predominantly used for shore bombardment were high-capacity projectiles, about five feet tall and 1,900 pounds, that could be set to explode in the air or on contact.

October 1982. Crewmen swab the forward deck of Battleship New Jersey during sea trials. Navy tradition called for wooden decks on large warships, and teak is a superior decking material because it is less slippery when wet, slower to burn than other woods, and a natural insulator that keeps the ship cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather. Teak wears down over time, and for the last few years the ship has been replacing worn planks as part of a deck restoration project. The teak removed from the ship is available for purchase in the Battleshop.

Sailors wave their caps and cheer ship as the Australian oceanographic ship HMAS Cook passes Battleship New Jersey during the Australian bicentennial celebration. Cheering ship is a centuries-old naval custom for rendering honors, dating to the age of sail, when crews stood along the yards and cheered.

October, 1989. Battleship New Jersey fired at a target ship during Fleet Exercise ‘89. This photo shows one of Turret I’s 16-inch guns just after firing. Each shot took six powder bags weighing 110 pounds apiece, and afterward compressed air was pumped through the barrel to clear out lingering gas and debris. You can get a closer look at these weapons when you visit.

October 1982. Battleship New Jersey sits on the horizon, underway in the Pacific for sea trials. She has just undergone modernization and is getting ready for her fourth commission. Sea trials put a ship’s systems through their paces at sea before she returns to service. Today, guests can see what the 1980s modernization added, including the Combat Engagement Center and missile systems, on the regular tour route.

Vietnam era. Sailors gather around a plotting table during a firing run of Battleship New Jersey’s main battery. Before the 16-inch guns could fire, a firing solution had to be calculated. The primary computer for this job was the Mark 8 Rangekeeper, an electromechanical analog computer that worked from 16 points of data. Guests can see a Mark 8 Rangekeeper in Forward Plot on the Turret II tour, or in Aft Plot with general admission.

We’re building a crew member database with the goal of adding every person who worked on Battleship New Jersey, including shipyard workers. It’s still a work in progress but is now available to use on our website. We are grateful to the Institute of Museum and Library Services for funding this project.

Today we celebrate 25 years as a museum. On October 14, 2001, Battleship New Jersey held her grand opening as a museum and memorial, welcoming around 1,000 invited guests aboard for tours. The next day, she opened to the public, and her first public guests were a group of Marine veterans.

In the 25 years since, volunteers have given more than 775,000 hours to preservation and restoration. The ship continues to open more spaces to the public, from the 08 level to the bottom of the Engine Room. School groups tour the ship, scouts and youth groups sleep on board through our Overnight Encampment program, and our staff continues to record oral histories, preserving the legacy of the sailors who served on board.

Thank you to every volunteer, staff member, veteran, and supporter who has helped preserve Battleship New Jersey’s story. To celebrate, we’re rolling admission back to 2001 prices. On October 15 and 16, general admission is $10 for adults and $7 for kids.
