On this day in 1888, Harriet Tubman’s second husband, Nelson Davis, passed away at age 45 from complications of tuberculosis.

Born and enslaved in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Davis fled north and eventually settled in Oneida County, New York before heading to Pennsylvania and enlisting in Company G, Eighth United States Colored Troops. He was honorably discharged from the Army at the age of 21 and followed a close friend and soldier, Albert Thompson to Auburn, New York where he became a boarder at Harriet Tubman’s home.

Later, on March 18, 1869, Harriet Tubman and Nelson Davis were married at the Central Presbyterian Church in Auburn, NY and began their new life together. Davis is buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, where many of Tubman’s family members are also interred.

Run entirely by volunteers—including neighborhood residents and individuals who are or have been unhoused—the cafe serves as an inclusive neighborhood hub!
