The Choptank River Lighthouse replica stands at the end of a dock on the waterfront in Cambridge, Md. Admission is free. Donations appreciated. Coast Guard.

A small museum inside the lighthouse is open 9:30am-5pm daily May 1-Oct. 31. www.choptankriverlighthouse.org Completed in 2012, this is a replica of the Choptank River Lighthouse that guided ships in the Choptank River until 1964, when it was dismantled by the U.S. It served as an unforgettable icon to many—for generations of watermen, for visitors who came by steamboat, for sailors in regattas.

Today the replica has become a new icon for the city of Cambridge and all of Dorchester County, Maryland.

REMEMBERING LAUNCH DAY!
It was eight years ago this week that a big “Lighthouse Launch” event was held at Long Wharf to mark the start of construction on our Lighthouse. That day marked the culmination of many years of effort by many, many dedicated people in our community—our thanks to everyone who pitched in along the way to get the ball rolling! But then you notice a tiny, slowly pulsing light in the distance, and you feel both a sense of security and a connection to the past. You know you’re in good hands, kept safe by past and present.

Late July in Chesapeake Bay History

In late July of 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis moved his southern army to Yorktown, Virginia, and began constructing fortifications to establish a deep-water port. Because of this strategic move, control of the Chesapeake Bay suddenly became an absolutely essential naval objective for both the British and the American-French allied forces.

This late-July maneuver set the stage for the monumental Battle of the Chesapeake! A few weeks later, French Admiral de Grasse arrived at the mouth of the Bay with a massive fleet of 28 ships of the line, trapping British patrol frigates inside and blockading the waters. The resulting French success in the naval battle left them firmly in control of the Chesapeake Bay, completing the encirclement of Cornwallis's forces.

This crucial naval victory proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown, forcing Cornwallis to surrender and effectively securing independence for the United States of America!
