The Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the American Revolutionary War and formally recognizing the independence of the United States.

After years of conflict, the signing marked an important moment in the history of our young nation.

As we continue to commemorate America’s 250th, today is a meaningful day to remember the events that helped shape the United States. 🇺🇸

DOCTORING THE SOLDIERY
SEPTEMBER 5TH, 3 PM

OLD TOWN HOUSE, 11 Town House Drive, Pomfret Ctr. CT

The work of a military doctor during the Revolutionary War was a messy and dangerous business, and wounds that would be considered superficial today could easily end in amputations.

To learn more about surgery during the Revolutionary War, and the somewhat bizarre cures of 18th century medicine, join historical researcher and reenactor, Daniel Newman for a hands-on and interactive program. Mr. Newman has over 40 years in the study of 18th century medicine and surgery which he presents in the character of a British Surgeon to the 54th Regiment of Foot. The Good Doctor will discuss medical and surgical practices, remedies, and cures such as “bleeding, blistering, and purging” used during the colonial era.

The program will take place at 3 PM at the Old Town House, 11 Town House Drive, Pomfret Ctr. CT 06259. Arrive early for parking and refreshments. The program is free and funded by an America 250 Grant from The Last Green Valley. Donations are always welcome to help fund the ongoing renovations and upkeep of the Old Town House, built in 1841.

🍂 Save the dates for fall at Putnam Elms!

Putnam Elms is pleased to once again participate in Walktober with open tours on Saturday, October 3.

We’re also looking forward to a special program October 11 featuring Kenneth Noll as Charles Dickens in “Ghost Stories to Scare the Dickens Out of You.”

What a beautiful day at Putnam Elms!

We are so grateful to Jackie and Annie from The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross for sharing the inspiring story of Emily Malbone Morgan and bringing Miss Morgan on Vacation: Putnam Elms as a Haven for Community & Companionship to life.

Emily’s vision was truly ahead of her time. In 1906, she transformed Putnam Elms into a place of retreat and renewal, welcoming working women to a space where they could rest, connect, enjoy nature, and renew their spirits. Her belief in the importance of companionship, faith, and community continues to inspire today.

A heartfelt thank you to Jackie and Annie for sharing Emily’s story, and to everyone who joined us for this meaningful afternoon. We are grateful for the opportunity to share the history and legacy of this special place.
