Elokuu is the Finnish word for August. It is derived from "elo," meaning "life" or "harvest." In Finland, it marks the transition from summer to autumn.
In Finland, nature is both wild and free. The law allows anyone living in or visiting Finland the freedom to roam the countryside, forage, fish with a line and rod, and enjoy the recreational use of natural areas – respectfully, of course. This is known as “The Everyman’s Rights,” or Jokaisenoikeudet.
The forests are bursting with berries and mushrooms this time of year.
Wild blueberries (Bilberries): August is the peak or late-peak season for these small, sweet dark-blue berries, which grow densely on low bushes in pine and spruce forests.
Wild raspberries: Found along sunny forest edges, clearings, and logging roads
Lingonberries: Begin to ripen and turn bright red toward the end of August, especially in drier, more open forest types.
Cloudberries: The tail end of the cloudberry season can still be found in northern bogs and wetlands in early August.
Wild Mushrooms
Chanterelles (kantarelli): Golden-yellow and fragrant, these popular culinary mushrooms emerge in mossy mixed forests following summer rains.
Porcini (Ceps / herkkutatti): Early autumn boletes begin to pop up in older pine and spruce woodlands.
