Bioomingdale's first school was called the Bloomingdale Academy. Its not clear if that is the same school that was part of the Pompton Township School System, or an earlier one. A school is noted in Bloomingdale as early as 1840. The Pompton Township School was located at approximately 101 Main Street [site of the Car Wash). The land for the school was donated by Martin J. Ryerson in 1844. There were only three rooms in the school, two small classrooms downstairs and one large room upstairs. When the Hilltop School was built on Captolene Avenue in 1886, the upstairs of the Main Street School became the headquarters of the John E. Beam Post No. 92 of the Grand Army of the Republic [GAR, Civil War Veterans). The GAR or Grand Army Hall as it was known, was the largest interior space in town available for social events like wedding receptions and banquets. It served as the center of Bloomingdale's social activities for many years. Organizations from the Fire Department, to church groups, to fraternal organizations, met there. The two downstairs rooms of the old school later became Louis Van Orden and Fowler Vanderhoff s Paint Shop
