Meet Kim Moore 👋🏾

Kim has been volunteering with BCRI for nearly two years and now gives her time three days a week. She says one of her favorite experiences volunteering was Juneteenth because there was a little of everything to do!

For Kim, volunteering is a chance to share in and be part of the stories that come through the Institute.

From the Archives ➡️ this Alabama Board of Cosmetology license belonged to Dr. Ruth J. Jackson, a Birmingham cosmetologist, businesswoman, educator, and community leader.

Jackson founded the Poro School of Beauty Culture in Birmingham, where she trained aspiring cosmetologists and helped Black women build careers in the beauty industry.

As we recognize Black Business Month this August, Jackson’s license is one piece of the archival record that helps us trace Birmingham’s Black business history and the people who built it.

Our Legacy Youth Leadership Program students have been busy this year!

They’ve spent a lot of time in our galleries learning about the people, places and events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement. At this point, they could probably tell you a thing (or twenty) about Fred Shuttlesworth.

They’ve also taken their learning on the road, spending a week visiting historic sites in Selma, Montgomery, Tuskegee and Atlanta.

This weekend, they celebrated a major milestone: their docent certification! 🎉

And there’s still plenty ahead. Over the next few months, they’ll visit historic sites around Birmingham and meet Civil Rights Movement leaders and foot soldiers.

We’re proud of how much they’ve learned so far and excited to see them keep going!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception of The 99!

It was meaningful to see so many neighbors gather to reflect on Birmingham's history and the stories behind how our city's 99 neighborhoods and 23 communities came to be, and how those histories continue to shape our lives today.

If you weren't able to join us for the opening reception, there's still time to experience the exhibition. The 99 will be on view through September 19, and we hope you'll take time to explore it.
