From the Educator:
When you are an Education Coordinator for a small Museum you not only schedule programs/ events, handle the social media, member contacts, tours and field trips, and clerical work but you also have to work alongside the archivist for advice, support, and having a "checker" for historical accuracies and inaccuracies. Archivists are a very important piece to a Museum Educator's puzzle. You may not necessarily need it but when it is there it is a world of help!

Museums nowadays are places where people can relax and learn history, science, art, etc. without the pressures of school or society. Museums are an outlet for people to enjoy themselves while immersing themselves into interactive history. Here is an infographic about the "Importance of Museums". Using Primary Sources - Teachers | Teacher Resources - Library of Congress

From the Educator:
Primary Sources are a great way for people to understand firsthand experiences through diaries, letters, and objects used in a specific part of history. Here is a great link from the Library of Congress explaining how to use primary sources. This is a great resource for adults, teachers, and students. http://www.loc.gov/teachers/usingprimarysources/

Primary sources are the raw materials of history — original documents and objects which were created at the time under study. They are different from secondary sources, accounts or interpretations of events created by someone without firsthand experience.

From the Archive: Digging through unlabeled materials is difficult, and frankly kind of tedious, but sometimes you come across cool things like this coded letter! It's part of our Stella Moore Collection, and dates to the turn of the 20th century. The paper is watermarked with "1889" as the date. There's no key to it, but we think the translation is at the bottom. #archivefinds #thirtytenfive #ayearofhistory #codedletters #ccha #vamuseums

From the Archives: Do you know what an archive is? I mean, we use the word pretty often in regular speech (emails are archived, texts, messages, etc.), but have you ever sat down and wondered just exactly what an archive was? Concerning the blog political poem. For " old Jeso " that is likely to be an anonomyous writer of a letter to the editor at the Courier newspaper Go to Chronicling America select Va newspaper Type in search "Jeso" then when the most revelent editions come up look for the Clarke Couriers their will likely be editions from other news paper but choose the courier editions first about 1909 1910 and see if Jeso's letter can be seen in print You could try typing in search "Old Jeso " but that is way more confusing because you will get tons of "Old " and very little "Old Jeso " try just "jeso" first That senator from 1898 to 1919 was a Democrat. That is the democratic machine of Clarke county so I can assume the anonymous letter writer is a Republican. Couldn't be many of those in Clarke County in he ought years of the 20h century. . One person that could fit the description of a learned man that had a nasty deposition was the teacher who ran a college preportiry school down in the millwood neighborhood from 1888 to about 1898 Charles Burwell's father went to that school I think the teachers name was William Wilmer he later became a professor at the Presbyterian college in Ashland Virginia. That teacher I dont like . He is a racists or certainly a segregationist. . He had a high opinion of himself. . Wether he was into Clarke county politics in 1910 I couldn't say . He probably lived down in Ashland at the time

I am a historian and I just came across your page tonight. I am a descendant of the Lindseys who lived at "Longmarsh" Plantation in the 1600s and I was wondering if anyone has information about them and/or the plantation? I live in Central Arkansas and while I would love to come and visit, I probably won't get to any time soon. Can you tell where the plantation once stood? I know Rev. David Lindsey is buried there, are there more burials? I am interested in things that are visible today. Thank you so much! [email protected]
