Welcome to the Beaufort Historic Site, set in the quaint seaport village of Beaufort, North Carolina. Beaufort, North Carolina's third oldest town, lies on the coast bordering the southern tip of the Outer Banks. Originally a fishing village and port of safety dating from the late 1600's, Beaufort has been visited by patriots, privateers, merchants and skilled craftsmen who built Bahamian and West

Indian style homes and public buildings. Approximately 150 of these restored historic homes proudly bear plaques noting names of earliest known owners and dates of original construction. The Plan of Beaufort Towne, laid out in 1713, survives in a 12-block area which today is on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the heart of the Historic District is the Beaufort Historic Site, which depicts 18th and 19th century coastal Carolina. The Site houses nine historic buildings as well as the Welcome Center on almost two acres.

From the Artist:
I painted whimsical angels for fundraisers, visited art museums, and filled my walls with works from other artists: but never seriously pursued my own painting until fifteen years ago. When a new friend, Susan Woodson, suggested we start an art gallery in Raleigh near NC State’s campus, I paused. Had I owned a business before? No. So, with twenty five core artists and guests, the Roundabout Art Collective invigorated the Raleigh arts’  community for eight years.

Thanks to instructors like Heather Sink, Kathie Odom and Trisha Adams, and Tim Horn;  my techniques have evolved.  I learn so much from Eric Rhodes’  PleinAir Podcast and have hauled my easel to Bermuda, San Miquel de Allende, Tuscany, rustic farms and lovely beaches.  Painting plein air is the perfect combination of painting and gardening, another hobby of mine.

Currently, my paintings may be found on Instagram, Facebook or at Mattie King Davis Gallery in Beaufort. A portion of current sales will be donated to our beautiful mountain communities.

Even though life is so full with family, friends, faith and fun; every chance I get I slip away to my studio or outdoors to paint.  Hope the joy I feel translates to the canvas and brings you great joy in your home or office!

We are excited to welcome newly juried artist Gary Bradley to the Beaufort Historic Site this Saturday, August 29, from 10:00am until 1:00pm!

Gary will be joining us on the grounds to paint and create a brand new work of art inspired by his time here in historic Beaufort. Gary’s artwork has already been a hit, as he recently sold two pieces at our Mattie King Davis Art Gallery and is returning to replenish the gallery with even more beautiful work.

But there’s an extra special treat! Gary will be painting on-site and then giving the finished painting away through a drawing to one lucky registered participant!

Come by the Beaufort Historic Site on Saturday, from 10:00am until 1:00pm, and watch an artist at work, and enjoy the chance to take home an original piece of art created right here at the Historic Site! Thanks Gary!

George has always loved to draw. Starting out as early as he could walk, he began drawing animals and dinosaurs. He soon stepped away from drawing dinosaurs while still maintaining a strong interest in animals and the natural world. He realized he had a talent for painting things moving and a strong understanding of anatomy as evident from his figure drawing and painting classes at East Carolina University. Painting outside scenes showing natural light in landscapes and seascapes further sparked his interest after college. Nature, animals, anatomy, motion, and natural light have allowed him to become the artist he is today.

From George Bason: “My desire is to capture moments of beauty in nature that fascinate me. Natural light and motion are of great emphasis in most of my work whether it’s anatomy of dynamic wildlife in their natural element, the beauty of the human form or the atmosphere of a landscape and seascape. I strive to achieve this through my realistic drawings and paintings. It makes me feel alive to render the beauty I see and feel in references and with my own eyes.”

Drew Hoover is a painter from Beaufort, NC, with a degree in journalism from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a major in Fine Art from Meredith College. Until recently, she was primarily a pastel and oil painter, and juried into Pastel Society Exhibitions regularly. In 2017, she won the Wilmington Annual Fine Art Exhibition. She also completed two portraits for the Faces of the Fallen Project at Arlington National Cemetery. Hoover began painting as a child with Promila Sen at the Arts Council in Wilson, NC, and was forever blessed by her mentorship and encouragement. She is thankful for the pivotal foundation received at the Governor’s School in high school and for all her other teachers and patrons along the way.

In traditional oil and pastel paintings, she interprets mostly landscapes that emphasized vast skies, water, vegetation, and life.

In these works, time of day is indicated by color choices and the direction of light. Most paintings have strong shapes, organic lines and movement, as felt in nature, inviting the viewer to exhale.
Also in 2017, she began to incorporate fluid and layered mixed media to give three-dimensional textures. She has two basic processes. One is to build up the surface with mixtures of putty, sand, crumbled eggshells and other found objects and silver or gold leaf, then to paint and wash layers of acrylics. These pieces usually tend to be more representational, for example underwater imaginings.
