Happy International Museum Day!
Today, as every 18th of May since 1977, the global museum community comes together for International Museum Day. This year, the celebration is being marked in the most exceptional circumstances since its establishment. This seems like a strange time to celebrate, as thousands of museums remain closed and the uncertainty of what will happen in the coming months overwhelms our thoughts. Yet it is precisely now that we need to spread the message of International Museum Day.
This global celebration was created with a clear objective: to promote museums as an important means for the development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.
-International Council Of Museums

Our Nature Trail, located at Gallants Channel, is coming to life! If you have yet to walk Leg #1 of the Gallants Channel Nature Trail you should make plans to do so!

The Trail starts on the western waterfront and winds about 1,000 feet through the maritime forest. It only take a few minutes to walk round trip and is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the views of the Newport River.

Eventually the Trail will circle the entire property, encompassing forest, wetlands, intertidal zones and a Night Heron Rookery.

Look for news of Leg #2 opening soon!

Typical of adult male Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) are its only two teeth (technically tusks) that emerge from the lower jaw. These teeth are from one that stranded on Ocracoke Island in Feb. 2016. Imagine what the Tooth Fairy might leave for you upon finding these under your pillow! #whaleteeth

QAR1274.013, known to lab staff as C25, is quite the standout piece from the usual QAR artillery assemblage. The unique bronze gun was discovered with its wrought iron yolk still attached, indicating that it was at one point mounted to the gunnel, or railing, of the ship.

In early 1718, Capt. Vincent Pearse, commander (1715 - 1721) of HMS Phoenix, a 24-gun sixth-rate man-of-war, was entrusted to deliver the word of the Act of Grace before arrival of Woodes Rogers and his new government of the Bahamas. Stationed in New York, he would sail to New Providence Island in the Bahamas and take the surrenders of any pirates willing to accept the king's pardon. http://bcbrooks.blogspot.com/2018/07/pardoning-pirates-hms-phoenix-to.html Quest for Blackbeard: Kindle edition (Updated!) now $9.99 at https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Blackbeard-Story-Edward-Thache-ebook/dp/B06XPMPTVM/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Just after his death in November 1718, Edward "Blackbeard" Thache's journal and papers were taken back to Williamsburg, Virginia by Lt. Robert Maynard. Thache intended this journal for his daughter in Jamaica and it was believed lost, later burned in a courthouse fire. But, Thache's friend stole the journal back from Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood's office and returned it to his family in Spanish Town. The friend, Jonathan Osbourn, later published his captain's journal to counteract the lies told by "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates," supposedly by one Capt. Charles Johnson. The author of this pack of lies was actually one polemical newspaper publisher, Nathaniel Mist, writing under the pseudonym to secretly raise funds for his legal fees. Here is presented the lost journal of Edward "Blackbeard" Thache, who declares for the sake of his child that "Blackbeard is NOT my name!" https://www.facebook.com/blackbeardNOTmyname/ baylusbrooks.com
