In 1998, a group of seven artists founded the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild to provide mutual aid and promotion of local artists in the Bastrop area and to encourage cultural interest in and appreciation of fine art. The Guild acquired 501(c)(3) status in 2006 and took up residence in a 1,600 square foot rented gallery/teaching space on Main Street in downtown Bastrop.
The demand for gallery space, programs, events, cultural activities, and artist services grew, and in response to that growth, the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild, working closely with the City of Bastrop and the Bastrop Economic Development Corporation, began to pursue the development of a comprehensive arts center. In 2010, the Guild found the perfect property on Chestnut Street in downtown Bastropβthe 100 year old Powell Cotton Seed Mill and silos that had fallen into disrepair. Construction on the art center began in January 2016 and was completed in time for a Grand Opening in December 2016.
Around the same time the Lost Pines Art Center was completed, the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild also made the decision to change its name to the Lost Pines Art League. Currently, the Lost Pines Art League consists of over 150 members who volunteer over 5,000 hours per year.
The Lost Pines Art Center is a comprehensive regional arts center with a gallery, classrooms, artist studios, and leasable office space. The Art Center includes a 12,000 square foot main building, four silos that were recently renovated and will be converted into working studios, and a meandering sculpture garden that serves as an outdoor gallery with a replica of part of the lower Colorado River, contemplative spaces, event space, and an amphitheater.
The Lost Pines Art Center is open seven days a week and hosts regular classes, art exhibits, and monthly and annual events.
