La Peña is saddened by the passing of Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas, a recognized educator, collector, and longtime friend.
Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas was a pioneering sociologist, educator, collector, and institution builder whose work helped shape Latino Studies in the United States. Over a career spanning five decades, he championed educational opportunity, Latino scholarship, and the preservation and promotion of Latino art and culture.
Born in San Gabriel, California, Cárdenas became active in the Chicano Movement while attending college, documenting its history through photography and beginning what would become one of the world's most significant collections of Latino art. He earned degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and the University of Notre Dame, where he co-authored the landmark book Los Mojados: The We***ck Story.
Cárdenas taught at the University of Texas at Austin, later founded the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and led the Inter-University Program for Latino Research. He also established Galería Sin Fronteras, co-founded Latino Art Now!, and played a key role in expanding Latino representation at the Smithsonian Institution.
Alongside his wife, Dolores Carrillo García, he built and donated a renowned Latino art collection to major museums, ensuring lasting public access to Latino artistic heritage. His advocacy extended to education, civil rights, and public service, including expert testimony in the landmark Supreme Court case Plyler v. Doe.
Remembered as a generous mentor, passionate collector, and joyful storyteller, Cárdenas believed institutions exist to create opportunities for others.
Above all, Gil treasured his family. He found joy in sharing meals, telling stories, making his grandchildren laugh, and celebrating the accomplishments of those he loved.
Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Tomasa Álvarez Cárdenas and Frank Cárdenas.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores Carrillo García; his sons, Xoan Cárdenas and Alessandro Cárdenas; his stepchildren, Jessica Duarte (Damian), Jason García (Jennifer), and Jon Paul García (Lauren); his cherished grandchildren, James, Isabella, Maximilian, Joseph, and Thomas Duarte; Jalen and Juliana García; and Trinity and Jaxon García; his brothers, Frank Cárdenas (Rosalina) and Jacquline, Julian, and Nicolas Cárdenas; Robert “Bobby” Cárdenas, and daughter Lianna Cárdenas Wilkerson; and extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date by the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Gilberto's memory support organizations, museums, educational institutions, scholarships, or community programs dedicated to expanding opportunities for Latino artists, students, and scholars, continuing the work to which he devoted his life.
