Red Dot Art Spree is coming up, and we need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to lend a hand before, during, and after the event. As our biggest party of the year, Red Dot takes a lot of hands to make it happen and we’d love to have you on our team!

Join us for Crosscurrent, a special evening of readings presented in partnership with Alienated Majesty Books and held on the final day of larí garcía’s Spirit of Discrimination.

Three writers will read works of their choosing inspired by themes of incantation, displacement, giving voice to the voiceless, and hauntings—all crosscurrents to the exhibition.

Hexpartner is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and digital artist based in Austin. Fascinated by electroacoustic composition and improvisation, they frequently combine the use of synthesizers, generative drum patches, string instruments, and layered vocal harmonies during live performances.

In larí garcía’s Spirit of Discrimination, the nature of objects is transformed, detached from their intended use to become conduits between the spirit and physical realms.

The use of found objects seen throughout the exhibition is part of garcía’s own artistic practice. They feel that every object has its own innate meaning beyond their social or political context. The artist repurposes these objects, resulting in sculptures that create a dialogue between materials ancient and modern.

When Betye Saar came to Austin for the opening of her exhibition at Women & Their Work in June, 1996 , she was almost 70 years old. Despite a lifetime of creating what is now described as “ground breaking” art, she did not receive widespread museum and scholarly attention until late in her life (her first solo exhibitions at MoMA and LACMA were in 2019 when she was 93). In their famous poster, “The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist” The Guerilla Girls ironically list that “knowing your career might pick up after you’re eighty” was what many women artists might expect. ⁠
⁠
Famous for confronting and complicating Black stereotypes, Saar did not allow her work to be confined to political and cultural issues. She continued to explore more subjective concerns; in “Personal Icons”, her exhibition at Women & Their Work, she investigated metaphysics, memory, and personal history. She said at the time “there is an apparent thread in my work that originated in my prints in the 1960’s and weaves through later collages and assemblages and into my current installations. This thread is a curiosity about the mystical.”⁠
⁠
We are saddened by Betye Saar’s death and also inspired by the life she lived and what she achieved. She continued to make work throughout her life (with and without public recognition) and was ahead of her time in ways large and small: in 1996, in Austin, her hair was dyed purple.⁠
