The Carver Museum & Cultural Center is a free museum, dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of African American history and culture. The Genealogy Center is an extension of the Carver Museum and Cultural Center and acts as a public resource for learning about family history. The Carver Museum and Geneology Center are currently open to the public. Entrance is free and walk-ins are available. Masks are required for entry.

Does your 10-14 year old child love to dance? Sign up for a required information session for all students looking to apply to the Carver's free after-school ballet program, "Dance For All". Parent(s) MUST be present. Session will include 30 minutes for program overview and Q&A, followed by a 30 minute window to fill-out and submit the application for your student. This program will be accepting 20 students, ages 10-14 years old, and begins the first week of October 2026.

Ballet has a rich history spanning over 500 years, but its roots in elite aristocratic institutions have often made it inaccessible to most communities. Today, many aspiring ballet dancers still face barriers to participating in ballet— whether due to the high cost of training, limited representation, or a lack of inclusive spaces. The Carver is proud to partner with Capitol Contemporary Ballet and ATX Artist for Social Change to offer free ballet classes to our community, starting this fall!

In partnership with the staff of Oakwood Cemetery Chapel, the Carver Genealogy Center invites you to the upcoming 4th Saturday Genealogy Seminar! Join us on Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM and meet the team from Oakwood Cemetery Chapel. This seminar and Q&A on the history of Oakwood Cemetery and the various populations buried there, interprets the 190 year history of over a century of Austin’s complex and how that history intersects with the later Evergreen, Plummers and Austin Memorial Park Cemeteries.

Join us at the Carver for a free screening of “The PVIL Story: Separate…But Equal?”, a documentary directed by Mark Burns that explores the legacy and impact of the Prairie View Interscholastic League. The evening begins with a reception from 5:30-6:30 PM, followed by the film screening from 6:30-8:15 PM. A short Q&A with the filmmakers will take place immediately afterward. The documentary features appearances by Joe Greene, Ken Houston, Warren Moon, Jimmy Johnson, Jerry LeVias, Bill Bradley, and Andre Ware. Presented in partnership with Mad Dog Entertainment.

Interview your family and collage an art piece together that honors legacy. The Carver Genealogy Center Invites community to a workshop you don't want to miss! Explore familial memory through oral tradition. Attend with your biological and/or chosen family to share ancestral stories. Family members can interview each other about their history and create a collage together honoring family legacy.
