Night at the museum anyone? Our night-time Victorian Death Rites Tours of the Seward House are for you!

Learn about the customs and symbols of death used by Victorian-era Americans, including the Seward family. With war, rampant disease, and high infant mortality rates, death was all too common for the average 1800s household. To handle this constant trauma, Victorians developed ways of coping with death that we may find strange today.

The Halloween season is here and that means Haunted History Tours are back! Costumed guides take guests around the Seward House grounds and the darkened streets of Auburn, sharing spectral encounters from Seward family lore, grizzly true crime stories, and other spooky accounts drawn from local folklore and history.

The Seward House Museum is seeking actors to portray historical characters for our Candlelight Christmas tours this December.

These tours recreate a traditional Victorian Christmas where actors will perform a 5-7 minute monologue as a member of the Seward family.

Interested applicants should email [email protected] If you have a resume and recent headshot please include them in the email.

October's Lunchtime Lecture is about ghost stories! Far from trivial yarns, ghost stories can help us unravel the complexities and contradictions that have always loomed in the American story, while satisfying our desire for drama and wonder. SUNY Cortland History Professor Alena Pirok will discuss Auburn’s ghost stories and what they reveal about how the past is remembered.

This event will take place at the SHM Event Center and is FREE and open to the public.

We want to give a big shoutout and thank you to Julia Liu! ( on Instagram). Julia is an artist who visited the museum back in June and was kind enough to send us a package of her amazing artwork. Her style and attention to detail (Julia's Seward is often depicted with his trademark cigar) really brings the 19th century alive. Check out her page for more of her incredible artwork!

Just back from a wonderful week in Providence for the joint AASLH & NCPH Annual Meeting! I was honored to be part of a great group of professionals presenting “Solid Succession: Succession Planning Tools for History Organizations” I also attended the Historic House Museum Affinity luncheon, so happy to serve on this committee and caught up with the ED of the fabulous Mabry-Hazen House Museum. I had the opportunity to visit the Rhode Island State House, attend a terrific range of insightful sessions, and connected with colleagues from across the field. A very well-done conference in a beautiful, welcoming city. Lots of new ideas to bring back to Seward House Museum, and even more appreciation for the people who make this field so special. Thank you to AASLH and NCPH for bringing us together, and to everyone who shared their knowledge, experiences, and perspective.
