Most history books mention slavery.

Far fewer show what enslaved people were forced to endure.

Some punishment devices were designed not only to restrict movement, but to create constant discomfort and serve as a warning to others. People could be punished for attempting to escape, resisting authority, or simply seeking the basic freedoms every human being deserves.

This is why slavery was far more than unpaid labor.

It was a system built on control, fear, and the denial of human dignity.

What makes this history especially difficult to confront is that many who supported or benefited from the system considered themselves ordinary, respectable members of society.

This practice became known as memento mori photography, from a Latin phrase meaning “remember that you must die.” The deceased were carefully posed for portraits, sometimes resting peacefully in bed, seated in chairs, or surrounded by grieving family members. Photographers occasionally used hidden supports, strategic lighting, and other techniques to create a more natural appearance. The goal was not to deceive, but to capture a final memory of someone deeply loved.

In an era when death was a familiar part of daily life, these photographs served as both memorials and keepsakes. Families displayed them in albums, lockets, and frames, preserving a connection to parents, spouses, children, and siblings who had passed away. What may appear eerie today was often viewed as an expression of affection, remembrance, and mourning.

In the final months of the American Civil War, 23-year-old John Peter Bailey of Company F, 6th Ohio Cavalry finally returned home to Ohio. His family had spent months hoping and praying for his safe return. When he finally walked through the door, they discovered the war had already taken more from him than anyone could see.

Captured in October 1864, Bailey had endured months inside Salisbury Prison in North Carolina, where overcrowding, disease, and severe shortages devastated thousands of prisoners. By the time he was exchanged and returned to Union lines in early 1865, his body had been broken by hardship and illness.

Doctors tried to save him, but there was little they could do.

Back in Newton Falls, surrounded by his family, Bailey spent his remaining weeks fighting a battle he could not win. On March 31, 1865—just days before the Civil War effectively came to an end—he died at only twenty-three years old.

For his parents, the loss was unbearable.

In an era when photography remained expensive and uncommon, families often had few images of their loved ones. Wanting to preserve the memory of the son they had waited so long to see again, Bailey's family arranged for photographs to be taken after his death. In one image, his father, Reuben Bailey, sits beside him. In another, his mother, Rebecca Bailey, poses with her son for one final portrait.

Raised in a traditional Afghan culture, Sharbat Gula had never posed for a photograph taken by an unrelated man. Sitting inside a refugee camp school near Peshawar, Pakistan, she covered her face with her hands. Only after encouragement from her teacher did she reluctantly lower them.

The photographer was Steve McCurry. It was 1984, and millions of Afghans had been displaced by the Soviet-Afghan War. As McCurry documented life inside the Nasir Bagh refugee camp, he noticed a young girl whose striking green eyes seemed to reflect both fear and resilience. He took a few photographs and continued on his assignment.

Neither photographer nor subject realized they had just created one of the most famous images in modern history.
