Mesa Historical Museum The Mesa Historical Society records and tells the stories of Mesa residents, past and present

After getting its start in the 1940’s, the Mesa Historical Museum was incorporated in 1966 by citizens concerned about the preservation of Mesa’s rich history. The museum’s original home was at the old City Hall building in downtown Mesa. This is now the location for the Arizona Museum of Natural History. The Mesa Historical Museum operates out of the Old Lehi school building. The original Lehi Sc

hool, built on land donated to the Lehi Settlers by the Rogers family in the 1880s, was a one-room adobe building (similar to the replica in front of the museum). The little community had outgrown the adobe school house by the early 1910’s. The current building was constructed in 1913 and the adobe schoolhouse was demolished. The building was expanded in the 1920’s with the addition of two new classrooms. During the Great Depression of the 1930’s, the Works Progress Administration made additional improvements, including the auditorium. The Lehi School was moved in 1976 to an updated facility down the road. Slated for destruction, school officials discovered it would be more expensive to tear down the school buildings, due to the sturdy construction of the auditorium, than rebuild on the site. The City of Mesa purchased the site and resold it to the Mesa Historical Museum in 1986 and the museum opened its doors to the public in 1987. Improvements and changes have continued as the museum strives to tell the story of Mesa and the valley.

What an incredible evening as we celebrated the opening of our new Royal Air Force exhibit!

This special one-year exhibit tells the story of the over 2000 British cadets who came to Mesa during World War II to train at Falcon Field before returning to serve their country. Their time here left a lasting impact on our community, and we are honored to help share their stories.

This exhibit was made possible through a wonderful collaboration with the Arizona Aviation Historical Group, CAF Airbase Arizona, Falcon Field Airport, and the descendants of the British cadets who trained here. We are grateful to everyone who contributed photographs, artifacts, research, and personal stories.

We were also honored to welcome Mayor Mark Freeman, Councilmember Alicia Goforth (Mesa Council District 5), and Councilmember Jenn Duff (Mesa Council District 4), who is a descendant of one of the pilots who stayed in Mesa after the war making the evening especially meaningful.

The exhibit opens to the public tomorrow and will remain on display for approximately one year. As a special thank-you, active-duty military personnel and veterans with valid ID will receive free admission to both the Mesa Historical Museum and the Arizona Baseball Museum tomorrow only.

We hope you'll join us in exploring this remarkable chapter of Mesa's history. ✈️🇬🇧🇺🇸

Exciting news! ⚾️🏛️

We’ve has been selected to receive a 2026 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award for the rehabilitation and preservation of the historic Lehi Auditorium — now home to the Arizona Baseball Museum.

We’re incredibly honored to see this important piece of Mesa history recognized and preserved for future generations.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible!

We’re honored to share that the Mesa Historical Museum and Arizona Baseball Museum have received a 2026 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award for the restoration of the historic Lehi Auditorium.
What was once a leaking, run down storage building has been transformed into Arizona’s first and only permanent baseball museum. ⚾
This project took years of hard work, fundraising, preservation, and incredible community support — and we’re so proud to see it recognized at the state level.
Thank you to everyone who helped bring this historic building back to life. ❤️
