A visit this week to Carrie Mae Smith’s studio in Gilbertsville, NY offered a moving glimpse into the quiet rigor and emotional resonance behind the paintings in Offerings, her upcoming two-person exhibition with Mike Casey at Hawk + Hive.

Smith’s intimate still lifes - glasses of flowers, heirloom china and carefully observed domestic objects - carry the spirit, she says, of Emily Dickinson’s poem, “All I may, if small,” embracing restraint, care, and the poetry of everyday ritual.

Carrie Mae Smith received her MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Delaware in 2013.
Recent solo exhibitions include Lowell Ryan Projects, Los Angeles, CA; the Locust Grove estate, Poughkeepsie, NY; and the Berman Museum of Art, Collegeville, PA.
