SOUTH GALLERY
S*X | Linda Lucky

This show S*X came about as my having an itch to create another art show at the IGCA and make it as playful as possible. I chose a controversial subject that asks the question what is sexy to you?

Life is very serious and as we age we need to play more. So get your sexy on and come down to the International to see this whimsical and lovingly prepared fun art show.

NORTH GALLERY The Rebirth of Shipwreck | Ted Kincaid

How often do you find yourself falling back to a place of familiarity and comfort when confronted with adversity? For some of us it is further back than others. For some of us it is our childhood when we used our toys to make sense of the world. The Rebirth of Shipwreck is a narrative exploration of trauma, stumbling, healthy choices and healing through the lens of the artist's childhood. Not all paths are the same and not all paths lead to a destination.

Figurescape | David Pettibone

It’s important to me that the painting is allowed to develop organically. I try to keep the work open for as long as possible. To do that, I paint directly from life. When painting this way nothing is static. Colors shift with the sun, shadows grow and then disappear. These infinite micro changes insert an element of the unexpected and force me to respond in ways that I could never plan for. Working on paper has allowed me to respond to these changes in new ways, through cutting away, adding to the composition and even collaging new substrate to manipulate the surface. The result is an improvisation of intermingling layers of physical texture, of illusion and flat strokes of color that weave the impression of figure and landscape into a cohesive whole.

If you are in Fairbanks don’t miss Owen Tucker’s exhibition 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 on view at the Bear Gallery through Saturday, August 29. And if you are elsewhere, maybe consider an Interior road trip this month!

“Tucker works across collage, mosaic, and sculpture, splicing and grafting found materials into new compositions. A few years ago, after a lifetime of drawing and other mark-making, Tucker traded his pencil for a sharp blade — a shift that opened into a practice of breaking materials down into color, texture, and fragments of meaning, then rebuilding them into something new. Everything is a potential material, from old books to building supplies to the common dandelion, and Tucker’s collage practice has naturally extended into mosaics and quilting. He sees his creative process as closely tied to contemplative practice — more meditation than engineering, built from countless small, repeated acts of attention.”

The Bear Gallery is located on the 3rd floor of the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts in Pioneer Park and hours are Mon-Sat from 12-6 PM.

This post is part of our series celebrating exhibits and other work by our wonderful gallery members. You can see more about IGCA membership at www.igcaalaska.org/membership.
