Slow down and make something by hand in this slow craft series. Hosted by the Anchorage Weavers and Spinners Guild, Slow Craft Sessions showcase a range of techniques, from loom and tablet weaving to macramé and more.

In this beginner-friendly session, learn the basics of rigid heddle weaving. Try multiple looms, spend time weaving and see how different yarns behave within a weave structure.

What might human systems learn from the ways other living communities organize themselves?

Experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats reads from his recently published book, "A Field Guide to More-Than-Human Governance." Keats considers the population structures and behaviors of nonhuman communities, from bacterial colonies to dolphin pods. Drawing on these observations, Keats proposes a methodology for looking to nature for ideas about how human systems might be organized differently.

Following the reading, Keats joins Museum staff to discuss the project, possibilities for future human governance and approaches to creating change. Keats will be available for a book signing and conversation following the event.

Vital & Creative is a series of creative materials explorations for adults aged 55+. This month, learn techniques for creating oversized paper flower blooms inspired by the exhibition Faux Flora and the décor of the upcoming Anchorage Museum gala.

Experiment with color, shape and texture as you create a bold bloom of your own. Take a flower home and make an extra to add to the gala décor. 🌷

Make plans for a fun-filled First Friday at the Anchorage Museum. On Friday, Sept. 4, from 6–9 p.m., enjoy free admission and an evening of galleries, hands-on creativity and quick trips through space. Explore four floors of exhibitions, get curious in the Discovery Center, make something in the Art Lab and journey through the night sky in the Thomas Planetarium.

Grab a bite from local food trucks, then join artist Duke Russell and community hosts for a casual “dinner party” on the Museum lawn.

ArtLab: Free Create 6–8 p.m.
Design your own unique bookmark and create alongside the community in a fun, judgment-free space. Open to all ages; all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Thomas Planetarium: Rapid Space Shorts 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8 and 8:30 p.m.
These quick planetarium experiences range from constellation tours of the night sky and cruising around the solar system to learning about light and the aurora borealis. Free; ticket required and available at the front desk.

“Repair & Reuse” workshops are part of a series rooted in a culture of repair, working to transform our culture into one that mends more readily than it purchases, creating a more sustainable community. This month, give well-loved knitwear a longer life.

Bring clothing with holes or thin spots and learn the basics of darning, Swiss darning and hand mending. Participants will learn to identify basic stitches and come to understand their significance in knitted garment repair.

Doors open at 6 p.m., guided demonstration at 6:30.

Tour "Arctic Marine Science: Sikuliaq to Shore," the Anchorage Museum’s exhibition that welcomes visitors aboard a recreated section of the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Sikuliaq.

A research vessel, the Sikuliaq studies how physical changes in Arctic waters around Alaska affect marine ecosystems and the coastal communities that rely on the ocean for subsistence hunting and commercial activity.

"Cold War to the Cosmos: Distant Early Warning Systems and the Arctic" looks at an era when the Arctic became a strategic site for surveillance and defense, technological optimism collided with nuclear fear, and artists broke with convention in powerful expressions of individual freedom. 🚀

Among those artists is Mark Rothko. His "Untitled (1958)" is currently on view alongside other works that reflect the artistic experimentation of the Cold War era, but its time at the Anchorage Museum isn’t over. After Cold War to the Cosmos closes, "Untitled (1958)" will move into the Art of the North galleries, giving the painting new surroundings and offering another context to experience it.

The loan is made possible through the National Gallery of Art’s () Across the Nation program, with generous support from the Mitchell P. Rales Family Foundation.

See Cold War to the Cosmos through Sept. 7. Then, look for Rothko in a new setting in Art of the North.

Learn the foundations of bead weaving while creating a pair of bead-woven earrings during "One-Day Bead Weaving Earring Workshop." This class covers materials and tools, pattern building, thread and needle techniques, maintaining proper tension and finishing methods. Through step-by-step instruction, participants will build the skills and confidence to continue bead weaving independently.

Designed for beginners and those looking to strengthen their foundational skills, this class provides hands-on practice that participants can carry into future bead-weaving projects. This workshop is designed to support people displaced by Typhoon Halong. Participants must be age 12 or older.
