Extracting Pigment from Stone

I was struck by how similar the way ancient artists extracted pure pigment resembles our own spiritual development. So I made this painting about it.

In certain metaphysical circles, we're taught that two keys to help us understand how the world works are the silver key of tarot and the golden key of astrology. The silver key uses intuition, and the golden key focuses on externally quantifiable data. When I arrived at my residency, I was given these two keys to access the facility. The profound synchronicity is not lost on me.

When the character in ‘Birthing the Joyful Self’ first appeared to me, they were floating above my bed in the morning when I woke. The second time, they were standing at the foot of the bed as I was putting on my socks. There was an empty hole it them, and I didn’t understand what they were telling me. A day finally came when they appeared in the parlour, lifted through the floor by a giant blue hand. They were abloom and reaching up, very much as they’re depicted here. At that moment, I knew they told a story and set to making them visible to others. Now, when I’m struggling with something, this image reminds me “no mud, no lotus”
The scale of “Birthing the Joyful Self’ aligns with the vision and is one of my largest watercolors. I must admit, these suckers can be very disconcerting when they show up. See what I mean when you visit it at Lapis Room .

Fine Art Prints of “Shadow Work” are now available on my website and locally at Ghostwolf Gallery.

Living decades with skeletons tucked in lumpy bundles under the bed may be uncomfortable, but at least it’s contained. That is, until it’s not. Then comes the huge wave of existential angst about which writers pen poems.
