NEWLY CONSIGNED: Taos Mountain by Wes Mills

Wes Mill’s work is characterized by his spare accumulation of graphite markings that suggest subjects through negative space and faint allusion. Scratches and dots that could be mistaken for automatic scribbling are in fact intentional, calculated outlines of the spiritual, if not literal forms of the natural world. In this work, scratches through pale blue pigment form a mountain like those surrounding the artist’s alpine home.

Wes Mills’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Whitney Museum, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, LA; among others. His exhibitions have been reviewed in major publications including the New York Times, Art in America, and Artforum. His work has been shown at PDX CONTEMPORARY ART (Portland, OR), James Kelly Contemporary (Santa Fe, NM), Richard Levy Gallery (Albuquerque, NM), Peter Blum (New York, NY), Dwight Hackett Projects (Santa Fe, NM), Galerie Albrecht (Munich, Germany), Rhona Hoffman Gallery (Chicago, IL), and the Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque, NM), among others. The artist lives and works in Taos, NM.

NOW PRESENTING “Benevolent Sunrise”, an online exclusive exhibition of paintings by W***y Bo Richardson.

Available exclusively on Artsy, “Benevolent Sunrise” is reflective of Richardson’s signature painting practice. His oil on canvas and wood panel works feature watery bands of vibrant paint that create otherworldly, highly emotive color palettes. Richardson describes his work as “philosophy in motion,” and states that, “my paintings offer a space for contemplation, continuity, and sustained reflection.”

This exhibition coincides with the release of Richardson’s first retrospective monograph, entitled “Music to Drive To”. “Music to Drive To” presents more than twenty-five years of sustained studio practice, emerging from a lifelong engagement with painting. The monograph features 70 works alongside a conversation with Max Protetch and writings by Stephanie Buhmann and Katy Crocker that document the evolution of Richardson’s paintings through a body of work shaped by continuity and sustained reflection.

OPENING SOON: Alex Ponca Stock - Particle and the Wave: Oracles and Symbols for Living and Dying

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to announce our next exhibition, a solo show by Alex Ponca Stock.

Particle and the Wave features eight abstract artworks that explore the conjunction of modern technological and scientific knowledge with the ancient knowledge handed down from our ancestors. Using the traditional beaded broadcloth found in Osage regalia, Alex Ponca Stock considers a broad array of modern and historical references, including color field painting, early Christian heresies, ancient mound-builders, and quantum physics. The result of her experimentation with larger-scale work, this exhibition is a mature showcase of Ponca Stock’s ability to visually dissect the currents of 21st century life.

Ponca Stock’s practice combines intensive research with the slow, meditative labor of beading to create objects with a strong sense of internal order. The composition of her soft textile works are often reminiscent of the aesthetic of technology—motherboards, logic gates, 3D renderings—without ever betraying the beauty and integrity of the medium. In her choice of color, Ponca Stock is highly attuned not only to the symbolic and emotional power of color, but its physiological effect.

Alex Ponca Stock (b. 1986) is a painter and beadworker from the Gray Horse District of the Osage Nation and the third generation in her family to graduate from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited by the Denver Art Museum, the First Americans Museum, and the Osage Nation Museum, among others. The artist currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.

Three new artworks by Alex Ponca Stock will debut this weekend at the annual Santa Fe Indian Market! Come to Santa Fe Plaza on Saturday, August 15th or Sunday, August 16th and visit the artist’s stand (SFT E 526) to take a look.

Commissioned by Richard Levy Gallery for the upcoming exhibition Particle and the Wave: Oracles and Symbols for Living and Dying, these works can be viewed again at Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque from August 26th–October 17.

Did you know that each of Yuki Murata’s Core Samples paintings is labeled with GPS coordinates? The unique coordinates for each piece correspond to the location where the painting had its genesis.

First, the canvas was imbued with the terror of the landscape by exposing it to the elements—icy water, desert soil, etc. Then, soil was gathered from that location and, back at Yuki’s studio, ground into pigment and applied to the weather-worn canvas.

Come see Murata’s earth paintings in person at the gallery until Saturday, August 8th. And while you’re here, try entering the coordinates of her work into Google Maps to discover the spot it’s tied to.
