Mr. Juan Garcia and Ramon Espinosa, both members of the Maria Del Pilar Garza Historical Museum in Alamo, TX, worked together to return a Bible from the early 1900s to its rightful owners after about 125 years.
About 20 years ago, Mr. Garcia came across a carton box filled with items for sale at an estate sale, and he took it home. He could only see what was on top: a variety of items (tools), etc.
Putting the carton box aside, he went about his daily chores and responsibilities. After a few weeks, he saw what else was in the carton box: a Bible, pictures, old telegrams, and a handwritten letter.
Mr. Garcia set the Bible on an office shelf. By then, he was already thinking about finding the Bible's true owner so he could return it.
After years passed, Mr. Garcia retired and joined the Maria Del Pilar Garza Historical Museum; he felt a stronger need to return the Bible to the rightful owners, but his only tool was Google, where he found no information to identify a name or address.
Mr. Garcia approached Mr. Oyoque, the Museum Director, and Mr. Oyoque asked me to help Mr. Garcia search for the Bible's rightful owner.
In the span of two weeks, using Ancestry and an old phone book (1986-1987); we were able to make a perfect match and found three members of the Henry B. Stiers. On our first home visit, we met Lou Ann Stiers Bell, the granddaughter of Mr. Henry B. Stiers. Her husband and nephew were also home.
We handed the Bible to Mrs. Lou Ann Stiers Bell; it belonged to her Grandmother, Lula Edith McCornac Stiers. We took pictures to commemorate our meeting.
The Stiers-Bell family was grateful we came over and returned the Bible, a momentous, valued family possession.
The family was invited to visit our Historical Museum in Alamo, TX.
