πŸŒΏπŸ”Ž TRINIDAD BIOBLITZ 2026 – MATURA! πŸ¦‹πŸΈπŸπŸ¦‡πŸ•·οΈπŸŒ±

What a weekend!

The Trinidad Bioblitz 2026 took place this past weekend in Matura, bringing together scientists, naturalists, students, volunteers and nature enthusiasts for another fantastic celebration of Trinidad and Tobago’s biodiversity.

The UWI Zoology Museum (UWIZM) was pleased to once again be part of this annual event, joining teams in the field to search for, identify and document the incredible variety of species found in the Matura area.

From insects and other invertebrates to birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants and much more, Bioblitz provides an important snapshot of the biodiversity of an area while bringing together expertise from across the country.

Beyond the species count, Bioblitz is about collaboration, discovery, education and a shared appreciation for our natural heritage. It also provides an excellent opportunity for students and volunteers to gain hands-on field experience alongside researchers and experienced naturalists.

A huge thank you to the Bioblitz Committee and the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club, the organisers, participating organisations, researchers, students and volunteers who made Trinidad Bioblitz 2026 – Matura another memorable weekend.

πŸ‘ And a special thank you to everyone who represented and supported UWIZM in the field!

Here are a few moments from the weekend. πŸ“ΈπŸŒΏ

🐾 Behind the Scenes at the UWIZM! πŸ”¬πŸ¦΄

Our UWIZM Volunteer Programme gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with real zoological collections while learning the skills involved in museum curation and collections management.

Our volunteers assist with activities such as specimen preparation, preservation, cataloguing, labelling and general collections care, while gaining practical experience that complements what they learn in the classroom.

These sessions are also about building a community. Students from different backgrounds get the chance to work together, develop new skills and contribute directly to the preservation of Trinidad and Tobago's biodiversity heritage.

A huge thank you to our volunteers for giving their time, energy and enthusiasm to the UWI Zoology Museum (UWIZM). πŸ’š

Interested in volunteering with us? Keep an eye on our page for upcoming opportunities to join the UWIZM Volunteer Programme!
