Fun fact: Mario was originally called Jumpman in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. He was renamed after Mario Segale, Nintendo of America's landlord, who reportedly confronted the company over unpaid rent.

In 1993 Segale told The Seattle Times "You might say I'm still waiting for my royalty checks."

Ask and ye shall receive, here’s how the sausage is made. 😂

Pic 1 and 2: I wanted to do a more detailed design using the Bauhaus geometry from pic 3, a previous design, building up the colour blocks around his core, then letting it taper into more realistic limbs and features, as if he’s breaking free from the design.

For tricky hand poses, I use an easy hack, I photograph my own hands, cut them out in Photoshop, block them in with solid colour, and use them as a guide. Simple and effective, unfortunately time consuming when you try 10-20 different finger positions.

But technically accurate doesn’t always look right. In pic 1 it's correct the left hand fingers wouldn't be visible as they'd be in a straight line when viewed side on.

For the pose I wanted the right hand thumb would come inwards and be almost fully hidden by the palm, which doesn't work for a single colour silhouette, it ends up looking weird and thumbless, so I tried an alternate one with the thumb visible. You have to find a balance between realism and design aesthetics, sometimes you get it sometimes you don't.

And yes, I’ve had my daughter photograph me holding a broom handle to nail Jedi lightsaber hand positions.

I originally designed it as a regular portrait and then remembered the photo so added a tongue.

Fun fact: in 2025 a signed photo of Albert Einstein’s iconic 1951 “tongue-out” photo sold for US$338,630.

Taken by photographer Arthur Sasse, it was — one of nine original prints Einstein personally requested, signed and inscribed by Einstein himself.

Fred Astaire 🎩

FUN FACT: After Fred Astaire’s 1933 RKO screen test, studio talent scout Burt Grady supposedly noted:

“Can’t act; slightly bald; can dance a little.”

Despite doubts that the Broadway star’s stage success could translate to film, producer David O. Selznick saw his potential and pushed for him. Astaire went on to become one of Hollywood’s most celebrated dancers.

I've been experimenting I tried Posca paint markers and wood instead of canvas. It's not finished.

I absolutely love them, took a lot of getting used to but turns out paint in pen form is pretty awesome, I have a tremor so found it way more comfortable than a brush. I'm curious to see how they perform on canvas. The ones I bought were super wide, I didn't think to buy any fine points, so it needs a serious amount of touch fixing after I buy some finer points. My only critique is that they don't sponsor me 😜

And.... NO CLEANING BRUSHES!! 😍

I also used standard Bunnings acrylic wall paint for the background it's way runnier than artists paint so you need more costs but the finish is way more uniform and smooth and you can even use a roller.
