Everyday moments can trigger the most profound ideas.

Yoo Hyun Mi (Hyunmi Yoo) was putting a puzzle together with her son in 1997 when the blank back of a piece caught her eye. To the artist, the pictured side represented the conscious mind, while the blank side represented the subconscious, full of possibilities yet to be explored. That revelatory moment grew into a short story, then a body of tangible work that continues to evolve to this day.

Over the years, Yoo’s work has been part of major collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art. Now, we’ll encounter The Blank Puzzle at a scale never before seen in Southeast Asia.

A blank page is the hardest place to start yet the most generous.

For Yoo Hyun Mi (Hyunmi Yoo) blankness has never meant absence but potential. Her Blank Puzzle project began in 1998, and her second residency at STPI in 2025 builds on the figurative puzzle motif of her first, surfacing familiar forms that now carry a fresher story.

That has meant a merchandise movement for artists still finding their footing, a space for first solo shows and classes for children who are curious about art—a colourful lifelong WIP project.​

Material experimentation takes centre stage once again at Frieze London () where artists push the possibilities of print and paper. Working closely with STPI’s Workshop, artists crystallise their ideas into distinct visual languages.
